A weird start to the day Spanish radio as our clock alarm at 7am in the morning We drove straight to the Monterey Peninsularsquos main attraction the 17mile scenic drive and home of Pebble Beach Golf Course. It was unbelievable standing on the 1st tee watching the golfers tee off. There was even an official starter for casual Saturday morning golf. That was only topped by the scenery on t

Day 5

Today has been a mix of everything and every kilometer has been worked hard for. Started out in the fog with a head wind then the wind died away and was replaced by winding road along the coastline with lots and lots and lots of hills think thatrsquos going to be the theme of the next part of the trip somehow.Anyway after a while the sun decided to intermittently burn off enough fog to shine

Oh the beautyThough both of us were battling colds that had us reaching for tissue boxes and cough drops we managed to take in some of the majestic beauty that was the Big Sur coastline. Whether it was sweating up hills or plunging down steep curved roads that ribboned through the jutting cliffs we experienced the coast as only cyclists can. I am writing this right now atop a comfy twin bed

Down to the supermarket for more breakfast bars. We stumble across Nob Hill which turns out to be the local supermarket that Penny used whilst living in Pacific Grove for a year. It's only a few streets away from her place in factAfter another breakfastinapacket we headed out to find Penny's old place a blue house near the sea. After some confusion we found it and according to Penny who sa

South of Carmel to Big Sur

After visiting Point Lobos today I decided to make the 30 mile or so drive to Big Sur to experience that stretch of Highway 1 that I have not yet seen. Turns out Big Sur is mostly a camping community and is not right on the coast. However most of the road leading to Big Sur from Carmel is right along the ocean.

Crsquoest un peu comme si tout le monde en parlait et que personne ne sait vraiment de quoi ils parlent.
Scenic Highway 1 with a castle seals and a stunning coast line at Big Sur 25.26.2.09

The highway 1 runs directly along the Pacific coastline while the main traffic takes the faster inland Highway 101 or the Interstate 5 in the central valley. So after Santa Barbara the highway is hardly used. We prepared our first camping breakfast at one of the benches with nice views on the beach and left late morning to drive to the Big Sur State Park 100 miles South of San Francisco.
March 8 2009Carmel has to be one of the most charming towns in the country. I believe the shops and homes on the hilly treelined streets have jumped out of some fairy tale. We had breakfast with Frank and Gloria and Frankrsquos Fresno high school buddies at the popular Katyrsquos Place. Joe and I shared the Swedish pancakes crepes filled with berries and if we would be so lucky to live

I flew back to L.A. for the week to take care of a bunch of things I couldn't do in Mexico. I had a busy and slightly nervous week capped off with a wonderful camping trip up the coast in San Luis Obispo and the southern region of Big Sur. It was great to see everyone in CA but I'm excited about going back to Mexico

This past Sunday we both had off of work in time to head out on a small road trip to do some hiking. We didn't know at first that it would turn into a hiking adventure and we especially didn't know it would turn into such a mental and physical excursion We just had a general idea that we wanted to go hang around some nature and trees and that we have heard so much about Big Sur. So Sunday after

Or at least that's what the cycling book calls it... We've just finished cycling over and I mean up and over the much hyped Big Sur coastline. We've been hearing about it since we reached the coast as though it is the pride and joy of the Pacific coastline in America. Whenever chatting to someone along the way and we mention we are heading south we've seen faces light up and eyes start to t

It was the first time any of us had ever been to this amazing state. Before going on this trip I had this whole big picture of what I thought it was going to be like but most of the time everything turns out to be the complete opposite of what I think.
Wednesday 3rd SeptemberYesterday was great walking the beach. Saw more seals and lots of pelicans. For most of the day we had the whole beach to ourselves. However the Pacific ain't the Med. Water was freezing so like true Brits we paddled Seagulls helped to eat our picnic. Heading South again today towards LA which will probably take a few days at the leisurely pace we are travelling.

THE BIG SUR MONTEREY COUNTY Sunday 31st AugustToday we drove down to Santa Cruz had coffee at a little beach town called Capitola and then on to the Monterey Peninsula and Carmel. Capitola is real hometown America at its most charming. Tomorrow is Labour Day so lots of families were at the beach for the weekend. The old jetty was built in 1857 and like the town itself is unashamedly rustic
