Day 9 Saturday September 13th 2008 We were woken up on the train on Saturday about 730 in the morning when one of the attendants brought us our rail passes. We finally reached the station in Budapest around 845. Once off the train we had to find the nearest departure board to determine what platform the 905 departure to Eger would be leaving from. The board listed the train as leaving 10 m

The only Hungarian I know is Zoltan 'Paul' Viski guitarist with The Jazz Traitors. He's not really Hungarian he lives in Ealing. Before setting off I asked him what I should take with me as a gift when I visit some of his relatives. 'Curtains' came the reply. That's Hungarian humour.7.00am. Terminal 5 at Heathrow. Quiet uncrowded slow pace pedestrianonly lanes of colorful buildings leading to a small town square. The campsite was hosting the '11th annual international cave rescue conference' but there was still plenty of room for us. Weather was good so we parked up got

Bump in the road.

We're in Eger for a second day not by choice. We should have taken the 722 am train to Kosice Slovakia but we thought we could get there by bus later in the day. After much pantomiming no english here we discovered that there were no buses going to Kosice today. So we tracked down a nice hotel just outside of Eger and have been lounging by the pool reading our assignments for next week

After our Budapest blowout we decided to slow the pace down a bit and took a train out some 160km east to a small town called Eger in Heves County. Eger is at the heart of Hungary's wine region and this increased its appeal. We arrived at Eger station shortly after midday and were greeted by an elderly woman called Kathy who offered us to stay in her home during our stay.
Eger is known for it's valley full of caves turned wine cellars. There you can buy the local Bull's blood wine by the glass or litre straight from the cask. Legend has it that soldiers drank the wine for strength while defending the town. With their beards stained red attackers thought the soldiers were drinking blood.I met two American guys in the caves who only had a few hours in Eger bef
