The Riches in Richmond.

Richmond. That name brings back memories of being in my Uncle Wal39s pool a little hour away from Sydney nestled in the Blue Mountains. This Richmond is a little different. After our Megabus did a sweeping turn around a bend me and my companions had finally arrived at our first stop of Spring Break Richmond V.A. Situated under layers upon layers of railway tracks we dragged our luggage into a

So I have finally begun packing yet still it's challenging not to do the usual wait till the last night to get everything done routine. I probably should have done a little more research and planning o well I guess I'm going to stick with my original plan to just wing it. I have 90 days to stay in the eu so Im going to have to make my time there count... And just head to Asia a little sooner tha

I knew I shoulda taken that left turn at Albequerque.

I had intended to call this post something else..but in light of the days events the Bugs Bunny quotes is far more appropriate. So we got off to a late start. Miscommuniction often leads to delay and it seems today is not different. Once we were under way we made reasonably good timeuntil as we approached Hartford the GPS was nagging us to turn for Route 91 and Craig saw the sign which read

The Glory of the Newish South

Today for the most part was another day for rest bills and laundry. It did have one very significant cultural site. In 1898 Lewis Ginter who had made a fortune in tobacco decided to build the finest hotel in the world. It would show the world that Richmond had recovered from the devastation of the Civil War and was once again an equal of cities in the North. He named it after Thomas Jeffers

War and Remembrance

Richmond Virginia is a very odd place culturally. Most of the city feels and acts like a modern regional capitol that is slowly being absorbed into the Washington DC exurbia. The rest feels like an important outpost of a distinct regional culture. This difference appears most dramatically where the Civil War is concerned. The former viewpoint sees the war as a complex conflict over many issues partic

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Today I visited one of the most important museums on the entire trip.I ended up spending the entire day there. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts was founded very late by art museum standards a mere 75 years ago.The devastation of the Civil War meant there was not enough wealth available before then in Virginia for art patronage. When I last visited the museum was buildi

Monument Avenue My next day started in Monument Avenue.I say in because the name refers to a neighborhood as well as the street it grew up around. The actual avenue is a Parisian style boulevard with a wide grassy meridian.Every couple of blocks various Confederate groups erected a grand monument to a Confederate hero. With one exception all are Virginia natives. In a city filled with statues to

The memory of history

The next part of my trip dived deep into history how its presented and what is says about us.The destination was Richmond a city heavy with historic symbolism. For someone who grew up in New England with its own everpresent links to the past visiting Richmond is a peculiar experience. Most of it feels like any modern city. The remainder feels like the capitol of a country that no longer exists.

We woke up and made our way to the train station which was super close I was happy to be in Frankfurt the night before my flight was leaving since it left more room for error because things can and do go wrong To make a case in point Derrick and I almost boarded the wrong train to the airport but like the rest of my trip we fixed the mixup just in the nick of time. We ate lunch at Union Station and then picked up our rental car. The parking lot at Washington DC Union Sation is quite extensive we had quite a difficult time trying to find the rental car up a couple of floors and across a bus depot. We got our car a Nissan

Every year the James Center in Richmond VA gets set up with holiday lights. Since this is my first year in Richmond I'm doing all these things for the first time. For my family and friends back home here are some photos of the James Center all lit up.Note I need a bigger tripod...the shots of the buildings with the lights reflecting did not turn out well.
