Krakow Poland November 2009

Monday 2nd November 2009My Easyjet flight from Liverpool to Krakow is efficient and uneventful. I like Easyjet so far they've never let me down and within 2hrs 15 minutes flying time aboard a well kept Airbus A319 with a good tailwind Irsquom touching down in a frosty Krakow. Quickly collect my bag which is thankfully near the front of the carousel and then take a mini bus transfer to the cit

Krakow with speed

Well my journey began when I left Sebdog's apartment at 1100pm and I knew it was going to be weird for the first few nights not having him to share a bed with. The train journey I was embarking upon was around 20 hours long and I knew my arse was going to feel it. My first connection was in the wee hours of the following day and then again at around 7 am when I got onto my final train at hamburg

On the evening of 29th September I left Berlin by train in BerlinLichtenberg I got on the train to Krakw. I had a big big suitcase a big backpack and sleeping bag with me. The polish train guard was surprised at my suitcase's weight by helping me to get it on the train. I was travelling during night and had booked my own little bed in a six men train compartment. There was really little space

I woke up early this morning to go on a tour of Auschwitz. When I was having breakfast while checking for the Phillies score something I didnrsquot expect happened. ESPN.com showed they were still playing and the game was only in the eighth inning. HuhI had heard from someone a long time ago I forget who that going to Auschwitz wasnrsquot recommended since there isnrsquot much to see. Th

Poland Farewell to Wroclaw and Krakow

So today we finally slept in.. and sleeping in means until 930am.. My definition of sleeping in has changed since in Europe The first thing we did today was go to the trainbus station to see what was the cheapest way for me to get back to Prague. We found out that there were NO buses going to Prague from Krakow OR Wroclaw... My Polish friends told me not to worry but I assured them I was qu

The long train ride to Krakow

I awoke this morning saddened at the thought that I have to leave Berlin. Out of everywhere Irsquove been so far this was the most surprising. I really expected lots of down time but it ended up being go Go GO from the moment I arrived. The tour book really didnrsquot do the city justice and set some low expectations. But between the cityrsquos past two the most interesting times in histor

Wieliczka Salt Mines

This was one of the sights that I wanted to see while here in Krakow. It was such a snap to get to that it didn't matter that my coffee this morning was instant coffee here in the room. I just didn't want to spend the time looking for real coffee so chugged the instant stuff and promised to not do it again.I had been met at the airport last night so had an idea of where the bus stop would be.

From Warsaw to Krakow

Driving in Poland is one of the most terrifying experiences I have ever had scratch that. Driving in Europe is one of the most terrifying experiences I have ever had though Poland was much worse than the more western areas. To pass in this country all one has to do is pull over the middle line and the rule is both the oncoming traffic and the car you are overtaking are to pull over on to the s

We were fortunate that no one came in to change their baby's nappies during the ride peeyuWe arrived at Krakow's Glowny Station around 4pm.
So off we set on our 19 hour bus journey to Krakow. It actually went surprisingly well. I think we had tired ourselves out after Amsterdam that we slept pretty well through the night and the next morning. We got to Krakow around 4pm somehow managed to find our way out of the bus station and to the hostel we had booked didn't have any luck finding couchsurfers for krakow It was called Oasis

We arrived around noon yesterday Thursday I think on a plane with propellers. This was our first propeller plane trip ever. Again a nice man with a Cramer sign greeted us at the airport. It is unbelievable to me that this whole porter thing is actually working. He drove us for about 20 minutes to Hotel Polski located just inside of Florianrsquos Gate Gothic Tower built in the 1300rsquos at

It's a rainy day and this seems to match our moods. No one really wants to leave Poland but we must return home or go on to our next destinations. Our team has worked through challenges and obstacles with fortitude and perseverance and they are understandably tired. Yet all are fullfilled and happy to have built well and helped the Habitat families realize their dreams of home ownership are

Against the better wishes of quite a few friends and natives I took the tram to Nowa Huta to see the architecture and stuff. Had a creeper following me.So i fled Nowa huta and took solace in a coffee shop at the mall where the bathrooms were free and the surroundings were familiar. That evening we went to a friend's house.
