I'm once again realizing the relativity of expense in adventure traveling. What is a budget for one is an impossible expense for others. When I took my first trip nearly 20 years ago I had a very tight budget. I was between jobs didn't know what I was going to do when I returned so assumed I had to manage every dollar carefully. So I did. I counted every little expense. Seldom did I have

I arrived here yesterday by motor bike. The one hour trip took over 2 hours. Time is very relative here. From Ubud to here they said it was very close only maybe one hour. From here to Ubud they say OH Very far Go figure. Two ladies next to me are from Belgium. Evelyn was the first I met. She stopped through here for one day on her way to Lombok came back and has been here for over

.March 31st 2009 Bali Padang Bay A really backward island similar to those of east Africa. At sail in we could see a volcano north of the small island Mount Batur this describes the island as mountainous therefore lost of climbing and switchbacks. We were tendered to the town pier as the tide was at its lowest very slow disembarking those with tour tickets first. We waited for an hour and

Padangbai is a great little ferry port town. The people are friendly the food is awesome and the White Sand beach is small enough not to draw the attention of most tourists. Padangbai is regarded as most to be nothing more than an arrivaldeparture point on the way to bigger and better but we both fell in love with the laid back feel and small family run establishments. Here on the White Sand

Yogya was a cool city with some great characters. Most notably a university lecturer who started talking to me straight after all the market sellers has driven me mad. He explained the 'spices' of life as 'speaking tasting and joking' and then directed me to a government owned batik Indonesia's traditional fabric painting workshop. Obviously I got lost but another friendly local with the wor

Everything that New Zealand Australia were Bali is not. Bali is not large. Bali is not sparsely populated. Bali is not populated by Englishspeaking Englisheating backpackers. Bali is not into toilet paper trashcans or milk in tea. At the same time it is entrancing purely because it is not those things. We were assaulted our first night by scenes of complete mayhem in the streets of K

Okay This may be a bit long winded as I haven't had access to interner for a while. Not sure if you are all aware but an earthquake and landslide over here have severed several cables carrying internet to Indonesia. Well so the feet...yes it seems no matter where I travel on this rock be it Grand forks or Bali I am the pincusion into which insects wish to insert their probiscii. My feet were

Just as I published it the internet fed up and sure enough I look today and I have no posting...so here we go again. After 5 nights in Lovina I took a Perama over to a small town called Amed. I got a room and discovered a coral reef right out front of the hotel. So obviously a snorkelled for a while. I walked through the town mostl

From Bali to Lombok via Nusa Lembongon

After months of anticipation and 26 hours of travelling we finally arrived on the tiny narrow road that was Poppies Lane Kuta. As the 3 of us piled out of the taxi and began to wonder just where this 'Fat Yogirsquos Bar' was that we'd arranged to meet in who should come wandering along Sharon. It must have been part of the Woolley telepathy that she should come along at that precise moment.

I'm 3 hours into my 10hour journey to Gilli Trawangan I'd decided to take the slow option to save some rupiah one of three little islands off the North East coast of neighbouring Lombok.Feeling a bit daft because I'd already decided a week ago to spend my time in the Gillis at the end of my trip rather than in the

Today was a day for celebration. The festivities were already in full swing when I came down for Breakfast. The entire family was dressed in their best and were busy praying and organising offerings and generally having fun. A feast had been prepared and as honoured guest by virtue of being the only guest staying... I was invited to try it all. It was a nice 'n spicy affair lots of meat

Bali an exotic island

On our sail into Padang Bai Bali Indonesia we pass low green hills. A volcano rises majestically behind them shrouded in clouds. The wind blows and parts the puffy whiteness to reveal the volcanorsquos jagged cone. Alan and I are taking pictures from the balcony when I spot many odd looking boats in the sea. They are white with leglike appendages sticking out from each side into the water.
