Dali

After our first night in our gorgeous hotel in Dali we woke up early to take a boat cruise on Erhai Lake. I was really excited because I was ready to lie in the sun and be on the water but what I didn't expect was the boat. Instead of a small leisurely boat which is what I expected we were faced with the monstrosity of a gigantic cruise ship. There was not much room to find sun and we spent a

Good time in Dali China

Dali is a very beautiful and peaceful old city. I have ever seen many chinese films about this famous old townbut last year when I were there I knew it is even more pituresque than what I have seen and heard before.

Strahlender Sonnenschein herrschte ber Yunnan.Yunnan befindet

Another hot and cloudless day 33deg although it was cooler this morning as we set off. Have been doing lots of climbing in the mountains today 1000m up then 1000m down. Lots of hairpin bends and lots and lots of smoky wagons labouring up the hills belching out clouds of fumesour poor lungs Our diet of rice and noodles. which are served for breakfast lunch and dinner is becoming r

A very hot day today 3335 deg C. It gets very hot in the afternoons but at 6.00pm when the sun sets it becomes a lot cooler. Most nights I have been in just shirt sleeves but last night I had to wear a sweatshirt. Dali was a very nice place very touristy with lots of vigour lights live music in the streets and 100s and 100s of shops. I bought 4cds of traditional music and s

Only a short report today. Have visited 3 pagodas and 7 temples. To tell the truth I was not too bothered about this visit but I went and was glad I had it was very interesting and needless to say a great photo opportunity. Sadly Frank one of the group put his camera down. He forgot about it for a short time you can guess the rest when he realised he had forgotten it and went to

Unmade roads and a beautiful lake....

Now in Dali. Had to take a shorter route today because the road is under construction. Travelled 6 miles on unmade roads then cycled around the the beautiful lake. Entered the old town through the East gate which had a pagoda on top. Had lunch at the 'Green Lodge Backpackers Hostel' had to wait quite a while as only two staff. Weather very nice again today 30 deg. Looking forward

Had another very good day with temperatures at 30 deg and I am still slapping on the sun screen. Have been on the roof top terrace of the Hiadong East Sea Resort hotel and spent time watching a spider that was at least 2 and a half inches in diameter in fact China seems populated by huge spiders The town is 2100m above sea level. Rode about 43 miles today it was difficult with

Day 26 Dali

Dali was a nice little town and a good way to break up the trip between Lijiang and Kunming. It is a little like Lijiang in that some streets are closed off to cars and are lined with touristy shops. But unlike lijiang it is layed out in the familiar square shape of many chinese cities with a surrounding city wall and straight streets that are easy to navigate. The first day in dali we took a

So my second part of Dali story will be more about the Bai people and their lifestyle. They call themselves BAI which has a first meaning of white but what they mean by it is actually PURE. Also their traditional clothing is basically white with colorful highlights. Women wear special kind of head thing which is wowen with symbols representing feng hua xue and yue.
The arrival at Dali was great. The Jade Emu guesthouse has a beautiful courtyard and very nice staff. The dorm is more a hotel room than a real dorm. There are three beds in the room which all fit about 4 Chinese. The bathroom is also quite large and made out of marble. The first night I also lucky to even have the whole room for myself The only tiny negative thing of the guesthouse is that the

Today one Irishwoman 2 Finns and I headed out to the hike above town. We took cable cars up the mountain hiked 12 km with some diversions and then took the ski lift back down to town. It was nice and shaded and cool and unlike Tiger Leaping Gorge it was paved for the most part making things easier. Made for more of a leisurely stoll than a hike. Which would explain our desire to leave

I took a crappy bike out to the surrounding area of Dali. It was hot as hell but enjoyable. After the ride I rode the ski style lift up Zhonge Mountain. The lift passes over a Chinese cemetary for 34 of the 20 minute ride up. The view from the top was really great.
