I woke up too early for my only stop this morning that I spent an hour to hang around the area near Alte Pinakothek and came back to the art museum five minutes before it opened. The Alte Pinakothek houses one of the worlds most important collections and is also one of the oldest galleries in the world. On display are more than 800 paintings among them numerous wellknown masterpieces of the 14t

Well I'd like to say that after we went to bed we all slept peacefully until the next morning.... but that's no where near true. At one point I was up with Camille watching TV at... oh let's say 4 in the morning. I eventually fell asleep on the couch with her but she was still wide awake. Once it got light outside and Camille could see it was snowing that was another big round of surprise and

European Odyssey 2009 still day one

When last I typed we were attempting to rally ourselves into going to the Erlangen Christ Kindl Markt. A Christ Kindl Markt is a Christmas Market. At this time of the year nearly every city in Germany has a Christmas Market. The one in Erlangen is fairly small and even that one had a children's merrygoround two vendors selling Gluehwein and hot chocolate and maybe 30 vendors selling handmade

We've survived the trip out. Step one accomplished. Renee and I just stayed up all night on Sunday night packing away. At 4am we woke the kids up and Jacquelyn drove us up to LAX. We arrived by 6am and so we were right on schedule since our flight was set for a 810am departure. We made it through checkin security and a quick burger king breakfast. Renee had time to chat with a nice pregnant w

A Whole City of Christmas

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is totally over the top about Christmas but that makes it a great place to visit at Christmas time. I kind of imagine the locals must be something like the Who's in Whoville from How The Grinch That Stole Christmas who must plan for Christmas all year. When we visited Neuschwanstein and the Romantic Road in September on a whim we drove home via Rothenburg ob der Taube

Day 28Monday July 28 I sipped my coffee grabbed a knife and spread a healthy pad of creamy butter onto a piece of freshly baked bread. The table was neatly set. Nothing special. Nice. The coffee was strong. Just as I like it. Midsip I gazed up at our hostsrsquo doddling about the kitchen. The retired couple appeared to be in their early 60s. They were quite reserved conservative

Day 27Sunday July 27 1997 I sucked in that fresh mountain air. Ahhhhhhh. It was beautiful. Fantastic. My lungs were singing with appreciation. I felt like hyperventilating just to give the two sacks of airy goodness a little treat. With the chilly refreshing mountain air and the experience of the past two days I woke with this awareness that I am not the same young lad who arrived in

Day 26Saturday July 27 Waking with a smile on your face is always a most welcome occurrence. I found one plastered on mine this morning. By the time I decided to emerge from my cot all of my fellow roommates were congregating around the cheese and hardboiled eggs in the adjoining cafeteria. Laying back and staring into the plywood ceiling above me instead of getting up I just recalled ov

Day 23Wednesday July 24 Yesterday I gave myself with a civics lesson in ldquoUnderstanding Germans and Germanic culturerdquo. As I consider myself an educated tourist I endeavour to learn as much as possible about the people and places I visit. I donrsquot just want to buy the brochure I want to touch and feel the real things. My second day in Munich was extremely educational.

Day 22Tuesday July 22 Located just 20 kilometers northwest of Munich is a sleepy Bavarian town. The quaint city streets are lined with mature trees forming a dense canopy over the span of the roadway. The town is situated just far enough away from Munich to be away from all the hustle and bustle. It is an everyday town. Normal. Average German men women and families go about their liv

Some go to New York to see a statue of some lady holding a flashlight. Others travel to China to walk on a wall. Many tourists come from across the world to my hometown Toronto just to see the worldrsquos largest phallic symbol the CN Tower. Why not

Day 19 I awoke to the familiar sounds that plagued my stay in Prague. No it wasnrsquot Oxlady rampaging through my room looking for her proverbial pecuniary oats. It was the ceaseless trickle of raindrops rapping upon the windowpane directly above my head. With my ambition battered once again I lay back on my cot and used the time to reflect on which direction the wind would take me n

Well it's been a while since I had time to sit down and write another blog entry and 4 weeks have passed since my 21st. So instead of the usual in depth rambling of what I've been up to I've decided to make this one a comparison of student life in Germany and student life in the UK. After 6 weeks of being here I've experienced a fair amount and after a nice trip back to York last weekend it's

Once again we drove to Novi Sad from Zurich to pick up some stuff we left there including skis and on our way there as well as back we stopped in Munich. We didn't have much time to explore the city so we decided to just stroll around and enjoy some bratwurst and white beer Aleks not me I prefer Helles typical local lager.
I had a quick breakfast and hurried to St. Jakob's Church. It was smaller than expected and it required visitors to pay Well after all it's a famous thourist spot there so fair enough. Built over a lane the construction work of this Protestant church started in 1311 and is famous for its altars principally the Heilig Blut Altar Holy Blood Altar by Tilman Riemenschneider.
