Bratislava

Our final Danube city after another four hour hydrofoil ride was Bratislava. After Vienna and Budapest it had a distinctly 'after the LordMayor's show' feel about it....but once we got under the skin of the place it certainly had character. No where on this trip was the old soviet era more evident in the concrete tower blocks and factory chimneys although the Historic Centre has had a bundle of

Oh dear I'm very sorry Slovakia but you were just a bit... safe. It's a real shame but the torusithoards have well and truly infested nicebutsmall Bratislava feeding on the charm it may have once had. It wasn't horible but did not stand out and mundane is the last thing you want from your travels.Sooo how did I get there Well the answer is my first ever night train. And I was aprehensive

Yes it finally happened we prebooked our accomodation in Bratislava in university housing that was being rented out for the summer to tourists. We thought it would be an experience and it was really cheap with 7 euros a night getting us our own room.We arrived at the accomodation and the building was massive there was probably well over 2000 rooms and the rooms were really nice with new bathroo

Yesterday was a scorcher. Woke up late 12 and went to the castel which we actually got into. Due to reconstruction we couldnt get that great of a picture of the castle. Also stole a rock which was a piece of the castleHeaded back to the room then out for some actual Slovakian Food. Amazing.
Last night we went on a pub crawl after checking into the hotel and putting our stuff down. We started at the American speaking 'Slovak Pub' then headed to the Film Cafe which has movie posters covering the walls but they are all in Slovakian so naming the movies turned into a game. Home Alone 2 The Mummy Legally Blonde Terminator and a bunch of others. They also had a few of those big movie

Off to Bratislava

Today we packed up got some cold cuts cheese and bread from Billa Supermarket and took a trolley to the station. But OF COURSE with our luck in matters of public transportation the train is late by 90 minutes even though the next train is 83 minutes after this one but that one is late too and changed platforms. Changing platforms is not all that bad IF you know they changed the platforms. We

I will Always love you Bratislava

We arrived in Bratislava late enough from Vienna. The train station was a lot smaller then the others we had been to. The only perceptions I had of the place were the ever so dark and gloomy ones I got from watching the film Hostel In the film the director Tarrentino perceives the place to be a dangerous city in which the locals kill off any tourists one by one. Within a few hours though of b

Bratislava feels like a Sunday everyday not because its relaxing and you don't have to work because let's face it when you've been travelling for as long as we have everyday is a weekend. No nothing is ever openWe arrived in Bratislava two years too late to get the really cheap eastern europe prices. But still the old city was pretty and there was a fair bit of sightseeing to be done. We

Bratislava is one of those cities that people simply reject off hand case in point when I was in Vienna 3 years ago there were 3 Swedish guys who wanted to take the bus to Bratislava for the day and everyone asked why their reason EuroTrip the movie where the 4 Americans live like kings in the city for pennies.
Sylvia's dad drove Joyce Sylvia and I to Bratislava for the day while he was in meetings. We spent the day walking around the Old Town. We started at the President's palace and took a bus up to the hill where the castle is located. Unfortunately it is being remodeled it was burned in the 1800s and has never been fully restored. We walked down from the castle to the original part of Bratisl

This trip was early in November. The Aberdeen guys went through Amsterdam then onto Vienna. They then had a short bus trip over the border to Slovakia where they hooked up with The Lithgae Lads who had taken the a flight from Edinburgh to Pargue where they stayed overnight. They then took the train into Bratislava the following morning. This was our first venture into Eastern Europe where we found i

Yeah so looks like I'm in Bratislava now pretty knackered and about to go to sleep. But I thought I should finally get my ass up and write something on this thing. The trip to Gdansk was rather bizarre...first I was standing with the other pathetic passengers in a giant queue on Hahn airport waiting to board. They wouldn't even make an announcement it was pretty frustrating just standing there

We got into Bratislava and walked down the historical district towards our hostel. It was quite nice and we took out some Slovakian krowns which ended up being 45 and that lasted us the entire trip We got to the hostel and messed around a bit on the computer and played some foosball.
Typical 15 minutes outside Prague it was white all the way to BratislavaVienna. Painless bus trip and apart from the ugly nylon coats and large shoulder padded 80's coats that the people wear Bratislava was lovely. The historical centre is less preserved than Prague but that was actually kind of nice.

Flight was full so there was a small crowd gathering near the luggage belts. No problems with baggages though prompt and efficient. Asked the money changer for recommendations for getting to Bratislava and she commented that it would be good to take the bus instead a sentiment echoed by the tourist inf

So I left Nottingham on a RyanAir flight to Bratislava. I had exhausted myself through nerves but couldn't sleep on the plane. I sat next to this really cute little girl but I couldn't understand a word she said. There were really low clouds but once the plane got above them the stars and moon were beautiful. Looking down I could see the lights from the ground below reflecting on the cloud

They were well into the celebrations before they even got on the train and they were well stocked up with booze for the three hour train journey. One of them brought his cigarette onto the nonsmoking train as Europeans tend to do and when he leaned

I had thought about going to Budapest but there were no tickets left. There WERE however tickets left for Saturday but the bus only went as far as Bratislava but I bought them anyhow.
