Bultanem Saram pt. 2 of 2Here39s an update well after the event. This goes back to a Sunday in September the second weekend after I got to Seocheon. I figured out those weird insect like things I ate with the Chinese women were immature silkworm pupa or larve. Glad to have figured that out. Anyway I met a ton of people at the beach on Sunday and a couple folks I may meet in the futu

half burned plans pt. 1

So the idea for Saturday was to go to Muiido island for the first ever South Korea burning man kinda thing. Burning Man is happening in now and this is supposed to be a little taste of it for all those inclined in South Korea. Long story short I missed it on Saturday. Why Because it39s on an island and I arrived too late to the ferry. I could kick myself for a litany of reasons why I ne

Dear Blog ReadersI feel that is obligatory to end our adventure in Korea with a summary of some of the things weve loved and hated whilst voyaging on this journey of discovery into the land of the morning calm. So lets kick things off on a positive note in no particular orderTop of the KPops1.	Boeun some say its the armpit of Korea but others say its the Las Vegas of Korea. I ag

I'm a Seoul man

OK technically I39m an Incheon man as that39s where the airport is. My flight from Seattle was fairly uneventful other than the 3 babies a few rows ahead of me trading off fire engine impressions for the whole 12 hours.I tried to learn a little Korean but the learn Korean program they had on the little screen was not very effective and it took me several runs through just to learn how

A map pin in South Korea that is. This is my first visit. After an easy but exhaust and gritfilled tuktuk ride to the airport in Phnom Penh I was able to check in immediately and go upstairs to the comfy chairs. Those of you aware of my craving for chocolate last night should know that I got neither the chocolate linga lingam nor the chocolates shaped like the big stone faces from the Angko

Day 10 Tokio to Sydney

Diesen Zettel

I'm in the plane and I'm not sure if it is January 19th or the 20th anymore I think I'm somewhere in between I just watched the sun rise over the mountains of Russia. A pink light so gently kissed only the top of the mountains all covered in snow. I can see rivers snaking through the ranges iced over and layered with powdery snow. I have the sweetest couple sitting next to me she is so help

As I write this entry I have tears in my eyes since I am homesick once again but overall I think I am doing much better then when I first arrived here. The first 2 week camp is done and I made it through. I taught my class of kids for 2 weeks and have a grasp on how to teach in the classroom. The next 2 weeks are a lot less intimidating. Actually I'm sure it will fly by.Good points about be

Christmas with the animals

PREIt's 3 days until Christmas and like the more Christian or Western part of the world I am EXCITED Even in South Korea which is traditionally a Buddhist country Christmas trees are going up and Christmas music is playing albeit 3 months too late. Why do we get excited I think it's because of the families coming together seeing your rellies that you can only fight or play with once a year.

The first I heard of North Korea bombing the Yeonpyeong Island on the West coast beside Incheon was from my boyfriend when he simply said to me It's started. What's started I asked confused. Dinner a TV show the rain The war he replied. None of my colleagues or my students for that matter had told me about the bombing that occurred at 2pm that day. Did it not concern me as someone l

Hiking Makoli and Korean pancakes

If you need to know one thing about Korean people it's that they are CRAZY about hiking and shopping I was rather surprised that they love the outdoors and didn't consider these two hobbies to go together until I went hiking in Seoul's national park Bukhansan. It's on the far side of Seoul about an hour from where I live and the subway gets more packed with every stop. Hordes of fashionable

So you're probably wondering what we do for fun here in South Korea. A night out is started ussually at a resturant with barbequed meat and a variety of side dishes such as the spicy kimchi bean sprouts tofu and salad leaves. The idea is to wrap up the meat in leaf with some kimchi or other side. Yum This is accompanied by drinks such as Cass beer or soju a strong vodkalike spirit. After an

The next day I went to work and shadowed the teacher I would be replacing. He explained to me it was pretty straight forward read the chapter in our perfect English 67 hours a day ask questions mark books and write some reports. The only downside was that there was no break in that 7 hour stretch so it was a game of adrenalin reserve sometimes. I noticed in the classes the students who range

Five weeks ago when I emerged from the capsule which had taken me from Wellington to Sydney to Incheon South Korea I was immediatly met by a wave of heat strong enough to knock me back a little. I had come from the middle of a New Zealand winter after a South American stretch of summer and I guess you could say my body clock or tempreture gauge was a little off. I'd tried to find a job in my ho

Hi gang. We got up at 4.30am on Thursday to leave for the airport. Korean Air was a wonderful flight. Couldn't complain much. We asked for emergency exit seats and got them. The extra leg room made the 10 hour flight to Sth Korea more comfortable but it was traded off by having to sit next to the toilets with the occasional bad smell and sometimes having a queue of people standing next to us. But
