Six weeks of planes trains and boatmobiles on the IcelandScandinavianBaltic merrygoround brought us to our full stop in the region the little surprise packet of Riga. With Latvia39s history sharing a raft of parallels with Estonia and geographically separated solely by that thin man made line we call a border I39d imagined Latvia39s capital Riga would be a carbon copy of sister Tall

Riga...Were Our Expectations too High

Riga was a place denied to us in December 2010 when due to the snow fall in London Heathrow Airport went to shut down and we spent two nights sleeping in the airport and another week in Slough waiting for a flight. We vowed to see it next time we were in the area Arriving in a city with high expectations is always a little dangerous as you are nearly always disappointed like we were in Riga. In

Brivdabasmuzejs Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum

A lot of funI had gone to such open air ethnographic museums in Germany and I love them. It is so nice to take long walks in such a beautiful setting. The houses are well preserved and can be visited. They are filled with the furnished tools craftwork and costumes of the time. It is good to appreciate the level of craftmanship that went into building these houses and these pieces of furniture.

I spent a few days exploring Rga. I browsed the amber shops I checked out the clothing sales I toured the old town I visited the museums.Rga was obviously a very wealthy city in the centuries past. It was a rich Hanseatic city. Several of buildings are of that period and they are very beautiful. The first of these buildings would be the House of Blackheads which was the headquarter of the

Saturday I left 6.45 to Warszawa centralna station. A huge monster of a building with constant renovations since the station had been finished in 1975. With a delay of 50 minutes just loading the train to Sestokai with too many people and too much luggage incl plastic washing basins and all other things you can imagine for over an hour we left. The normal train cabin in Europe and elswhere has for

I only had 45 mins to go to the shops to buy a packed lunch pack a rucksack and have breakfast.
After breakfast with an obnoxious and brash Aussie I walked down to the canal to take a boat trip. The 100 year old historic boat though solar powered were running late and only arrived after waiting forty minutes However it was a delightful tour of the canal and harbour although there was no commentary. I then met a local guide Aija Tamsone who took me on a three hour walking tour of Rig

This entry includes a text about our short stay in Riga on June 14 It is all too simple. We took an Ecolines bus from Berlin to Riga. The bus turned out to be very convenient and there was even an attendant and we could order meals and drinks but there were only several persons on this route. The trip took the whole day and we passed several cities and towns like Suwalki Marijampole etc. On
