It was towards the end of the day and the city looked a lot busier than before. Many locals walking around laughing smiling it seemed a happy place. It felt safer too. The Police donrsquot look as intimidating now with their florescent yellow vests. In transit at Riga airport and 5 hours to kill therersquos no better way to kill time than to exchange some money and head out to the Latvian ca

Once again we couchsurfed this time with a very nice family...Rebecca was from Germany and her husband Kris was Latvian. They had a boy Konrad who was just a little younger than me. The amazing thing was that they hosted us even though they had just had their second child 1 month ago. They lived in a great apartment r

Latvia 25th 29th July 2009It's not easy being Latvian. Sandwiched between Lithuania and Estonia with Mother Russia looking on disapprovingly Latvians can be forgiven for having ldquomiddle child syndrome.rdquo Worse still if you're Latvian then you are also the minority in your own capital Riga where ethnic Russians make up the largest demographic group. But being second in line

A weekend in RigaA few months ago we went to Latvia. We haven't come around to publish a blog entry on that trip until now. But we figure it doesn't matter much if we are a bit late before we publish our travel tales and photos. We spent a total of three days there enjoying some nice spring weather while walking around in Riga old town and a few other places. The old town is a World Heritage and i

Relaxing in Riga

After our overly enthusiastic first night in Riga we have spent the last few days taking it easy. The weeks leading up to our depature had taken their toll and we were a lot more physically mentally and emotionally exhausting than we'd realised. The evening of our last blog update we headed out for a sensible glass of vino and came across a strange but relaxed little place called 'Black Magic'.

Day 45 May 67Next morning we had an early star leaving by 6am. Our hotel kindly packed us a breakfast and then we were off to Riga by coach. About a 5 hour journey. Coming into Riga it seemed quite a depressing looking city with old Soviet style buildings or older buildings that had been neglected under Soviet rule. The bus dropped us off at the bus station next to the local food market whic

We arrived in Riga to the rain but it would take a lot more than that to dampen our spirits. Carrying two of the biggest backpacks in the world we avoided the temptation of getting a taxi from the airport and decided to 'rough' it opting for public tra

There is a sun above the clouds May 23 2009 Friday Riga City Latvia. The day is cloudy and windy as we start our walk over the bridge to the Old Town and on to the central market. The Balticrsquos largest market place has occupied the converted Zeppelin hangars since 1930. Each of the hangars or pavilions has a specialty meat fish groceries and dairy products.
