Across The Border For The Last Time

The journey over the Andes from Mendoza to Santiago is spectacular if it's not cloudy but the day we picked was snowy rainy and very cloudy so we didn't get to see Aconcagua When we got to Santiago the Chilean public sector workers were on paro so the museums and some of the other places we've wanted to go have been closed putain de merde. With a limited number of things to do we spent t

The conditions are simple Chile beats Colombia and theyrsquore qualified for the World Cup soccer. If not they get more chances later on. Chilean people know this. But the Chileans donrsquot want to wait. Itrsquos Saturday they want to party. We arrive early at the Irishstyled pub to get a good seat. A wise decision. We do get a table with a good view of the massive big screen. People w

Santiago and South

Four days off in Santiago were largely spent resting. However we did take the opportunity to go to Cocha Y Torro one of the largest vineyards in Chile. They produce Castillero Del Diablo which is prevalent throughout Central and South America as well as Tesco's etc in the UK. The tour was interesting and then we settled down for our tasting with cheese and four different wines. Educationa

Santiago and Valparaiso

Once again I found myself on a sleepless overnight bus journey. This time it was an 11 hour trip from Pucon to Santiago. The bus arrived at around 7.30am and by the time I had found myself to the metro it was rush hour. The rush hour here made the Jubilee line morning rush look empty. Every train that came in was so full absolutely no one could get on. After sitting on the platform for an hour I

Being back at Hostel 41 Below was great. So relaxed there and as before Veronica and Hernan were great to hang out with. Did an awesome walk near El Bolson. Headed back to BA and stayed in San Telmo this time. On a recommendation stayed in

Chile SantiagoWe arrive in Santiago Chile after a 13 hour flight from Auckland and as itrsquos been an overnight flight it doesnrsquot feel too bad although the jet lag kicks in later. We fly with LAN Chile find the service entertainment a bit poor given the length of the flight. The airport is pretty impressive and seems to be quite modern. We then catch an airport cab standard fare 5

I didnt feel so bad about taking my big suitcase because I wasnt the only one. My bag did weigh 19kg though which is kind of heavy I decided since I was bringing a big bag I might as well take whatever I wanted to I sat by Hayl

It is really cool having the snowcapped Andes towering over the town you can pretty much see them from everywhere can wait to get closer. The town itself is pretty dirty and very smoggy but the hostel we are staying at La Casa Rojer is great. httpwww.lacasa

Having recharged our batteries in Bahia Inglesa we set about discovering Santiago de Chile in 48 hours. We took our last overnight bus for at least a month. We could only buy semicama seats so fittingly enough it was quite an uncomfortable journey thus increasing the appeal of our impending campervan travels. When we arrived in Santiago at around 8.30am we were stiff and lost.
Just about every decent sized city in Central and South America has a Mercado Central. It might be called different names some might be pretty shabby and some might even be worse. But one common thread is that local food local people and loco tourists will be there. We are no different. We are headed there today after a 2 hour tour bus ride. In Santiago the Mercado is a landmark. It has

Intro to Santiago A Few Weeks AGO

Santiago Chile is touted to be one of the most spectacular cities of the world on a clear day after fresh winter showers. The Andes are located to the east and a small coastal range frames the capital to the west. But a clear day is rare here. Pollution and noise are the byword of the inner city. Cambios or money changers line the streets of Providencia. It was Pedro del Valdivia who fou

I am on my way on the great silver bird to Chile with my good friend Mike. We leave at 8am today on our way to Santiago then after a few days either fly down to Patagonia and then drive back up to Santiago and beyond. Or head to the beach or to the desert to the north or to the wine country or all of the above. Chile is called a land of extremes rather than a land of contrasts. It meande
