The next day our first stop was yet another waterfall on its own this is a spectacular waterfall but there just so many beautiful waterfalls in Iceland.....Later we had a walk round Lake Myvatn and visited an open air mineral bath. The temperature of the pool was a lovely 38 degrees and the sun was out too. The blistering temperatures of around 14 degrees was enough to give me a bit of a tan b

We went on a boat and we saw lots of whales. The whales were close to the boat. We saw lots and lots of birds. Also we went fishing and I caught a big fish. We ate it for dinner.
Rock of Ages

Day 6 Today we slept in a little bit and then chatted again with the Swiss family at breakfast. We packed up the car and headed out on our way to Akureyri the biggest town outside of Reykjavik. As we were leaving we saw another couple load their car with a bag specifically from a store near our home in Basel. Very weird. At the gas station we bought two of our favorite cookies that we had d

Always good to come to Akureyri. We drove from Stykkisholmur this morning. A bit of a wind on the way well some say there is no wind just that the calmness is in a bit of a hurry. No arguing about that.Short stops on the way first to see over the Berserk Lavafield. What a story behind that place. Then over to the waterfall called 39the speedy39 just think of Speedy Gonsalez39. We w

Everyone felt so relaxed afterwards that many fell asleep on the bus on the way over to Dettifoss the powermost waterfall in Europe. It is so amazing. Then back to explore Dimmuborgir Dark cities or rocks. No one got lost this time like last time with the Halton Outdoor Club. The pseudocraters did not get the proper

After two days in Reykjavik last June I headed up north on my questto get around the island clockwise in my final remaining five dayson Iceland. Since I had such a short time I had to scoot andquickly Taking the bus was the best option for me though far from acheap one. Hitching was out as on some of the roads one passing caran hour is not unheard of and I just couldn't risk spending

Akureyri

Thu was our first port in Iceland. Akureyri is in the northern part of Iceland at the end of a 36 mile long fjord. I think they said its the 2nd largest city in Iceland at about 18000 people. There are a lot of farms in the area and a lot of sheep. Apparently there are more sheep in Iceland than People. We had an early tour so headed up to the Lido for Breakfast and to get some pictures of th

Out of the Wilderness

We left our lovely hotel in Myvatn and continued on to Akureyr. The Norse Viking Helgi magri the slim Eyvindarson originally settled the area in the 9th century. The first mention of Akureyr dates back to 1562 when a woman was sentenced there for adultery Permanent settlement at Akureyr started in 1778 and the town was granted its municipal charter by the king of Denmark and at the time

Started the day bright and early with a visit to Akureyr. Stopped for gorgeous photos over the town and lake see panorama before continuing onto the town itself.Akureyr is the fourth biggest city of Iceland and the only metropolis outside Greater Reykjavk. The Capital of the North as it is often called is the administration and service centre of Northern Iceland. Although only arou

A tranquil paradise in Akureyri and a journey across the north.

Today was a big change from the landscapes of the past few days. We drove westward towards the northern town of Akuryri. This was a place where I could actually consider living. It lay near the bottom of the long fjord of Eyjafjordur. The mountains gave the impression of being in Switzerland and everything was a lot greener. This town is the capital of the north and an important centre for service

Akureyri...Bless You...

Sunday August 10So it rained Saturday night. The tent did what it does. Not that I'm not impressed by the microclimate created in such a small area but waking up with my hair soaked and the risk of getting all my stuff wet isn't fun. I packed up the tent and headed to the gas station to catch the bus to Akureyri around noon. I met a German school teacher who was also going to take the bus. He ha

Saturday August 9Well my second and third day in Reykjavik went off pretty smooth. After my rain out night I stayed at the hostel the second night and then used a hostel tent the third night. The third day I spent laying in a hot tub at the natural pools next to where I was staying. They are a lot like the ones at Radium. Then I walked downtown and bought a bus passport which allows me to go arou
