Short story

A pale light seeped into the cramped bedroom from under the door. There was just enough light for John to see Patricia's pale drawn face if he were to have looked. But John didn't look.	John stood stiffly in the middle of the room hands on the back of his desk chair staring out the window into the blackness. What are we going to do now he asked.	After a moment Patricia nearly hidden be

This is a Love Marriage not an Arranged Marriage	I spent my junior year abroad in the Indian city of Madurai located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Whereas in America my dirty blond hair and unspectacular looks often made me feel unseen in India I stood out. Every time I walked down a crowded road children and adults alike would stop and stare. I was an outsider no matter how much I

Sorry for not poppin anything up here for awhile and thank you to everyone for the emails reminding me to do so. With a shakey internet conection and the numerous things going on at all times over here it's been challenging to keep this going but here's a quick recap...i'll try and include as many random details as possible. Went to Madrid. Very cool city. Has a park in the middle which used t

This is me at Scott base camp in the Antarctic. It was just me and another guy John that had set out together and for six months leading up to our departure we thought wersquod managed to plan for every single eventuality. We knew exactly where we were to be by what time every day and packed only a little more food than was required for the whole trip. But true to form the schedule went a li

Leaving the Pole

I left South Pole on the 1300 flight back to McMurdo. I took some more photos at the pole marker and said goodbye to this remarkable place wondering when I would be back. The flight home was easy. 8 souls on board and I got to ride in the cockpit during take off which was really fun. I napped most of the way back to station and arrived in time for a big dinner. Vessel Offload has started and Stat

Not feeling my best

Today I woke up and drank 2 liters of water before brunch. Fresh fruit omelettes lots of tasty pastries a great way to start the day. After Brunch Scotty took a few of us through the tunnels and gave a tour of the off limits underground ice tunnels and facilities. The temperature down there was 66C and by the end my glasses were totally fogged along with the LCD screen on the video camera. I do

The Experiment

This morning I got up in time for breakfast and got a good start to my day. I met Jason who is the winterover science support tech at pole at his office at 800 to plan for the day. We decided we would prep the site in the morning and hope that cargo would have time to bring the Thermos Flask Box out to the site in the afternoon. We walked over to Cargo and talked with Webster about bringing the

South Pole Arrival

We arrived this morning on Mission P318. It was 28C and 42C with windchill. I unloaded off the plane and people were there to greet me saying that George Blaisdell had asked them to take good care of me. People at Pole are really nice and the station is amazing. I definitely felt the altitude after the walk from the skyway to the station having to stop and catch my breath. It wasnrsquot so mu
