July 1 2008A pretty long time has lapsed since my last entry. I did get back to Beijing spent a few days in Qingdao on the coast where I found the youth hostels 2 not all that welcoming and traveled back again to Beijing when I learned that Ann was about to enter China. But here travel plans made it difficult for me to stay and wait for her so back to the railway station this time with a tic

Observations and thoughts so far...

Chinese customs shocked me at first but you get used to them. There are about 23 million permanent residents in Shanghai and then about 4 million transients people like me so there is very little regard for personal space. People push each other to get where they're going disregard queues and never apologize for brushing by you. I learned how to say excuse me in Mandarin and used it for

So this past week was a very exciting week Even more exciting than my first week as far as cool things. Last week was a little rough in getting used to things but now that I am feeling much more comfortable in Shanghai I am getting to do a lot more cool stuff and I don't feel so completely incapable.I have a friend named Nichole who lives here in Shanghai from my stake back home. We graduated f

The First Week

So I have survived my first week in China without eating anything that made me sick or getting lost on the streets I think that is a success This past week was very eventful to say the least. Here is a list of things I have learned about living in ShanghaiThe smog and pollution is worse than anywhere I have ever seen. It took my throat some getting used to the first couple daysIf you are drivi

Awoke with a nasty head suprise much to a fairly empty hotal room as Sam Kelvin Mandy and Anita had left for England. Poor Sam..'he will just hate me for a week' and 2 hours sleep hell. We cleared up and Ben and I got a sickly taxi to the central station carrying all our kit. Got stuck into a KFC seem to eat more Western filth out here than back at home which saved the day and absored th

At 10am everybody stirred and we headed to Sacha's by 11am. We went cos of their buffetmain mealFREE FLOW champagne scene for 115 yuan about 8 quid. Sat outside bathed with sun and surrounded by plants and beautiful westerners it felt more Puerto Banus than China. We abused the champers to the max and were annoying the already annoyed waiting staff with our tipsy demands. 3 o'clock was the b

Shanghai and all that Jazz

Woke on the sofa in the hotel and went with Ben and Anita to look for a laptop for Nita. The technology malls in Shanghai are quite something 6 stories high and every shop filled with workers. Filled with workers mainly cos they dont have to pay them much and China's need to create 24 million jobs per year to cope with demand. Find a small laptop for about 300 quid it had poker capabilites which

Landed in Pudong Airport at 8am after a good flight with plenty of British comedy Peep Show and Gavin and Stacey and some fine cinema Superbad and Hitman to send me off to the East. 6 hrs sleep in 2 days and landing in dreary wet weather which after leaving a fantastically sunny Heathrow was slighty minor tho Missing everyone already but overridden by a sense of thrill and dread for the unkn

But we've been managing to stave off the January blues...sightseeing barhopping and restaurant sampling along with just chilling at night with a movie or odd game of scrabble which has all

I've been spending the past few days hiding from the rain studying and reading. I decided to treat myself to lunch at a restaurant today called Larbre de Provence in Metro City. I always see the restaurant pretty crowded with people eating the lunch buffet. So I go for the buffet too 39 rmb per person and I am seated. I get up to help myself. There's a bunch of cold salads and an assortment

I found a buyer I bought the bike two months ago to ride to school and since it's starting to rain and I'll be out of Shanghai traveling for the next month I decided to go ahead and just sell it. I posted it on Shanghai Craigslist and found a buyer. I bought the bike and lock for 300 rmb and I'm selling it for 150 rmb. Not bad. I would have kept it lon
