Zealous for Zagreb

Our spontaneous decision to head into Zagreb was fueled by the chance to experience U2 in this unique setting as well as an interest of seeing more of this incredible country that really is catching us a bit by surprise. We had thought most of our enjoyment would be along the coast but this venture inland has been wonderful. The country or at least the city of Zagreb has truly been captured

Picturesque Plitvice

After 5 days of rest and relaxation on Hvar it was time to get back on the road. Up at 6am we were in the ferry line by 645am. We ended up being one of last 20 cars on the 745am ferry. The 2 hour ferry ride was spent playing backgammon snoozing and sunbathing. Matt and Syd had their eyes on some marble bowls back in Diocletianrsquos palace in Split so as we drove back through they ve

And it would have behooved me to buy a map.... it is waaaay too easy to get lost scooting around those narrow windy passageways. Although had I not been lost 92 of the time I wouldn't have found a

We left Optija after talking a bit with Davor...and stopped for lunch in Karlovac. We ate at McDonald's and then met Domagoj at the toll area in Zagreb so he could take us to the hotel. We checked in and then went down to Jelacic Square to do some shopping. We also met Domagoj Martina Lea and Luka. Domagoj called Drazen Petrovic's mom to see if we could get into his museum since it is closed

Generalski Stol

As may notice Generalski is extremely close to the word General which is exactly what it means and stol being the word for table thus making Generalski Stol translate to Generalrsquos Table. It is south of Karlovac the major military base in Croatia and thus was a hot spot during the war in rsquo91. Most every adult in the town was enlisted to help in the battle and the other side of Mre

Trakoan Castle

This castle is one if not the best preserved castles in Croatia. It sits atop a hill that over looks the northern region of Croatia and a man made lake below. The castle held a lot of owners in its early years but was later acquired by the Drascaronkovi263 family. They were not kings or queens but simply an aristocratic family that led a good military career and was given the castle as a to

Medvedgrad

Another day trip was to Medvedgrad. Not exactly far from Zagreb the town is easily accessed by a quick bus ride and maybe 20 minutes of hiking. It is placed on the mountain that towers over Zagreb called Medvednica. Medvegrad built in the 1250rsquos was used as a castle to protect the kings and queens of Croatia during the middle ages. One popular story orated to me by Ivana is of Queen Jele

Nela a friend of Ivana invited us to a village that her grandparents lived. It was just outside of Zagreb maybe an hour and a half drive. On the way we kept seeing stork nests. Recently the Croatian government made a law to pay people for having a nest on their house I think then to remove it but we only saw them on telephone poles. When we arrived we were instantly fed and a lot. Food kept

We left Tucepi at around 915 this morning and after about 40 minutes on the scariest road I have ever been on through the Croatian mountainside with hairpin turns and 90 degree rock faces looking straight down at the water we reached the A1 highway a most welcome sight. With a speed limit of 130 we were in Zagreb in no time once my nuckles recovered from the climb up the mountain. This is

Today started out as hot or hotter than yesterday but the trick was to get going early. We were out by 830 and had 5 good hours of touring done before the sweltering midday sun got to a point where us mere mortals couldn't handle it. People here are dressed in jeans and leggings and even long sleeve shirts believe it or not The temperature in the main square at 9 pm read 28 degrees so I can

We arrived in Zagreb today on schedule at 12 noon and stepped out of our train to an unbelievable heat I couldnrsquot get internet at the hotel so I donrsquot know what the temperature was but it felt like 40 celsius. After a fairly long and steamy tram ride we arrived at our hotel area. Trams here come in two flavours the new modern airconditioned variety and the old somewhat beat

Wersquore trying to make it a bit closer towards the top of Eastern Europe i.e. Hungary Poland before our InterRail tickets run out which sadly means we'll have to give the Croatian coast a miss this time. The train was an older train.
We spent three rainy days in the safe but noisy harbour of Rab waiting for the storm which packed winds of 3540 knots gusting to 60 knots to pass. From Rab we sailed north to Krk and on to Cres in brisk cool winds and while these northern towns are interesting they do not have the extensive historical remains that we found on the Dalmation coast in Trogir Dubrovnik and Zadar etc. The weather

Hey all.Yesterday I was up very early to catch a train to Zagreb. The train was an older train with these crappy seats that mustve been designed for midgets because the bits of the cushion that is supposed to support your head while resting was doing a great job of supporting my shoulder blades so so so uncomfortable that was until about 3 hours into the train ride when I figured out that they
