There is an easy way to get from Rio to Isla Grande direct hostel to hostel transfer I realised too late but as always I had to make it more difficult for myself and my new chum Ellen. So after a bus to the bus station and then another bus to Angra dos Reas then another local bus to the port where I stepped on it and it then drove off without Ellen and then a walk to the boat and then a 9

And so I finally arrived on Ilha Grande. The early signs were good as we sailed into the island under the bluest of blue skies. I could even forgive the fact that the correct pronunciation of Grande all but rhymes with orange. Silly Portugese.I'd arrived with a few folk whom I'd met in Rio Cindy Marcus Francis and Jacqueline to give them names. Coincidentally that's actually what they w

Hello all from the lovely island of Ihla Grande. After a few hours on a private minivan and a short boat ride we reached our colourful little hotel on the small island. Its a pity about the weather as it has been slightly overcast but at least it wasnt rainingThe Island is very small with a few nice restaurants bars hotels and jungle walks boating activities. We didnt have a great deal of t

After spending a week in Rio de Janerio we were ready for some peace and quiet and a little beach time to recover We were in luck some of Brazil's most gorgeous beaches and exotic rainforests can be found 200 km south of Rio on the island of Isla Grande. Isla Grande boasts over 200 beaches and historically was a pirates hideaway and was later used as a prison. Interesting enough for us We l

Just taking a quick second to check in and upload some pictures. We left Rio on Tuesday for Ilha Grande a small amazing island that is an hour drive and an hour boat ride from Rio. There are no cars or ATMs on the island and it has only dirt cobblestone streets small shops restaurants and pousadas small hotels. Its a must if youre in the area. On the island is a great surfing beach

So off we wentAs you can see we had a great time here stayed in a hostel called Hostel Aquarius and it was right along the beach. The island probably took about 7hrs total by bus and by boat. It was amazing. No atms on the island but we were fortunate

Day 1 Saturday Ihla Grande looks like something out of a movie specifically Jurassic Park 2. The water is a bright green the terrain is mountainous and lush green foliage covers everything. Getting off the boat I had no idea where I was going. I had the name and address of the place I was staying but that was it. The place was a little difficult to find as the streets didnrsquot have mark

Journey to Ihla Grande

This was going to be tight as I was told there was only one boat and it left at 130. This was supposedly a 2 and a half hour bus ride. I ran into a girl from the hostel who was also going to Ihla Grande in the terminal. We got seats next to each other but didnrsquot talk much as we were both asleep most of the time. What was supposed to be a 2 and a half hour bus ride turned out to be a 4 hour

Ilha Grande is an island located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state and part of the municipality of Angra dos Reis. The island is largely undeveloped and noted for its scenic beauty which includes tropical beaches and a rugged landscape. The island once held a notorious prison which was open until 1994. This lack of human presence is the reason for its intact preservation making this place a

I travelled to Ilha Grande with an English guy called Rob that id met in my hostel in Rio. We took a bus to the coastal town Angra dos Reis then got a boat to the island. Ilha Grande is the 3rd largest island in Brazil and has around 3000 inhabitants. There used to be a prison on the island and apparantly when the prison closed down none of the policemen that worked there wanted to leave the

The community here is larger than the first yet there are no horses and carts here as on the second. It's also a much bigger island than either of them. It's a couple of hours south of Rio.I spent three days here hanging out with some of the gang from Arraial Joaqu
