Chongqing and Chengdu for a long march a tall buddah and some giant pandas

Right before our winter holiday I had been selected with a friend and fellow collegue Jeniffer to teach in a winter english camp in Chongqing. We had a wonderful time during my 1 week teaching stint and extended the outing after to Chengdu. On Friday of the week before last we left on our first excursion of the winter break. This was the first airplane ride of Meili. Although Meili handled airtrav

A little sightseeing and our main campus by the river

This update is mostly just to get some pictures out there. We should be starting to work at the university in a few days. So I should have some interesting things to say about our experiences with that but for now we are just hanging out and exploring. Here I share some photos of our exploring.

Now we live in China

For this entry I am going to keep it short. We found an apartment and it is very nice. That is to say that it would meet most of the standards of an apartment in the United States. That might not sound like much but I will just say that we were getting worried that we would not find such a place to live. We have electricity gas water and internet set up. Well internet was going to be set up.

First Days in China

We arrived in Chengdu in a somewhat more haphazard manner than we had hoped. First of all our flight from Shanghai to Chengdu delayed our boarding for about an hour and then our takeoff for another 45 minutes. Then Dani and I were supposed to meet a student from Sichuan University at the airport to take us to our hotel on campus. However our contact at the university was confused as to which day

Escaped Catfish

Today we went to the Yellow Dragon River. I expected to get on a little boat and float down a huge river for a few good hours so we packed on the bug spray. When we got there it was a completely different scene the Yellow Dragon River is a tourist area with traditional Chinese decorations everywhere and a beautiful manmade river in the middle of it. You can walk in or around the river and there

So we are kind of in rainy season and the ground is crazy slippery all the time. My friends actually did see a motorbike get hit by a taxi the other day Everyone was ok but we were wondering how long it would take to witness an accident in the crazy roads here. The suprises here never really end. We went to a restaurant for a friend39s birthday and the main course was entire fish served from

She said that we had been getting lost too much so she gave us locations in small groups to find using the busses. We found our location no problem but when we had to meet at the restaurant that was to be our final destination we literally had no idea how to get there. We were supposed to meet at Te

A series of confusing Chinese events...

Today was the weirdest day yet. I started classes yesterday and they are hysterical. We learn a ton and being immersed in the culture makes it much easier to take in the Chinese vocab because we are constantly using it. Conveniently we are using the same book as I had at nova and they are starting from the chapter we left off at I love my classes so far and tai chi was the funniest thing I could

Second day

Today was awesome. We finally got some sleep and I woke up at 7am which I39m sure you all know is pretty much impossible for me. I blame it on the jetlag. We got up this morning and as we left our apartment there were three women in red suits practicing tai chi with swords in the lawn outside. We had orientation in the morning and went over the schedule for our session. We are going to visit t

Today we visited the worlds Tallest Buddha in Leshan. The weather was perfect with blue skies and bright sunshine. From Chengdu it was a 2hr and 30 minute bus and coach ride just to get there but well worth the effort. We went with several travellers from the same hostel which made for a really enjoyable day. I had to get a taxi to the main bus station in Chengdu and then the 2 hour bus to Emei Shan followed by a taxi to the Teddy Bear hostel. In the afternoon I walked up to the nearest temple where there was a nice waterfall and some carvings built into the rocks. In the evening I ate Swee
