First night - First stop
Dinner in Portsmouth with Dana, Carol, and John.Say "New England" and we think lobstah!! Our quest began in Portsmouth, NH and continued into Maine and Massachusetts. I'd be embarrassed to admit just how many we devoured along the way. After arriving at Logan International, we picked up our rental car and headed to Portsmouth, NH to have dinner with our friends, Dana, Carol, and John. Our first taste of lobster was sitting dockside along the Piscataqua River. It was a fun evening with good company and classic harbor views.
We were delighted with the beach town of Ogunquit in southern Maine. The Marginal Way Walk along the rocky coast and the 3 mile long beach made this a two day stop of walking and exploring.
As we drove north, we encountered many quaint towns along the coast. Camden, Port Clyde, and Bellfast were a few of our favorites. Our elevator ride to the top of the Penobscot Bridge gave us an expansive view of the Penobscot Narrows and Fort Knox. We toured the fort which was built on the narrows to protect the area from a foreign invasion in the early 1800's.
Our ultimate destination was Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. We were meeting
Ogunquit's Marginal Way
A one and a half mile paved path along the rocky coast up with my sister, Nancy, and her family. They had rented a house in the center of town and this became the base for our many activities. We ate, hiked, shopped, played games, napped and had lots of family fun. It was a great week.
The route south took us to Hartford, Connecticut to visit Mark Twain's home. It was a lovely 1800 Victorian mansion. From there we continued on to Mattapoisett to visit friends. A festival was being held in New Bedford, for the oldest remaining whaling ship, the Charles Morgan. There were tours of the whaling ship, whaling exhibits, and a boat parade.
Other day trips took us to the town of Sandwich on the Cape and to Plymouth for a whale watching cruise. We walked Kathy's beach, ate lobster, and went for ice cream at the world's best ice cream store. At least in my opinion it is.
Before flying out of Boston, we visited the Sky Walk at the Prudential Center. The city views were impressive from the 50th floor.
Our big trip this summer will be in August. We will be heading back to Europe with stops in Switzerland, Poland, France,
Portugal, Spain, and England. I'll be checking in along the way.
