OAXACA WITH DONZETTA - 2014

Hi,

It has been more than a month since my last blog entry. Even the website has changed since then.

Well, I drowned my camera with a bottle of water in my purse. I had to go to Sams Club to buy a new one. One good thing...it has a panoramic view (See the photos at the beginning of the blog - something new on the site). One bad thing...it does not have a museum setting. But the choices here are less, so I'm glad I was able to get a replacement camera.

I will try to pick through an assortment of pictures. I hope that they bring a measure of pleasure. Please know that I put the pictures in a certain order but the website kind of jumbles them up. They are trying to get a fix for this problem.

El Ex-Convento de Cuilapam de Guerrero
This is an unfinished church from the 16th century. There is a legend about the priest and the devil and why it was never finished.
The 3 panoramas at the beginning of this entry are of the church.

Otra Vista al Ex-Convento de Cuilapam de Guerrero
This is another view of the church. The second president of Mexico was imprisoned and executed here. He was of part African descent.

El Mercado de Zachila el Jueves
The market in Zachila is very indigenous. It is held every Thursday (jueves). It is a short bus ride from Cuilapam. I took in both that Thursday.

This is where I stopped to eat in Zachila. It turns out that both women had lived in the USA, one for 12 years and the other for 20 years. The wanted to speak English with me.:)

El Anuncio para la celebracion en Gelatao
This is a sign noting the celebration of the birthday of Benito Juarez, past president of Mexico. His story is one of success despite all odds. He was born outside of this pueblo

El Centro de Medicina Tradicional
This is the center for traditional medicine in Capulalpam in Sierra Norte o Sierra Juarez. Capulalpam is a short distance from the birthplace of Benito Juarez.

Afuera del Centro de Medicina Tradicional
This is our group outside of the center for traditional medicine...me, Karen, Jeronimo (organizer) and our guide. Karen and I had a traditional massage....how delicious!

Jardin de Hierbas Tradicionales
This is a garden of traditional herbs that are used at the clinic.

Adentro del Temazcal
This is a picture inside of the temazcal, which is the Traditional Mexican Indian equivalent of the American Indian Sweat. It is a part of the traditional center.

La Iglesia en Capulalpam
This is the church of the town. Capulalpam is designated a 'magic town' by the government.

This is another view of the church in Capulalpam.

El Letrero Fuera del Centro de Los Jovenes
This is a center for young people. We thought that we would get an opportunity to see them dance but there was a town meeting, so no luck.

Una tienda en el pueblo de Teotitlan
This was a shop that I stopped in on my way to the bus stop in Teotitlan. I had come to buy tapetes (small rugs) and bags (hand colored and hand-woven). This town specializes in this artesania.

Un cafe en Teotitlan
This is a small café in Teotitlan where I had lunch. This was our central point for Envia, the micro-loan organization, In this town their first language is Zapoteco, then Spanish and we held English classes.

La Entrada a un Taller
I just wanted a picture of the man sitting in the door as I was headed to the organic market. It turned out that this was a weaving shop. So of course I went in and shopped.

El Telar y el Tejedor
This is the weaving loom for the family business of weaving. The is one of the children of the older man. The business started with their great-grandfather.

Un mantel con el Tejedor
This is the mantel (tablecloth) that I bought. It was woven by this son of the man in the door. He is also in that photo. He is very proud of their work.

El Jazz en el Jardin de Casa Colonial
This Sunday there was a jazz concert in Casa Colonial. Usually a lot of ex-pats go to the concerts.

La Gente en El Concierto de Jazz
This was the crowd at the jazz concert. The lady who owns the guest house (Casa Colonial) has musicians in to play during the 'snowbird' season.

El Jazz en el Cafe La Brujula
This was a concert in a newly opened Café Brújula. en Cerro Fortin. Many expert musicians were there. This is Lela Downs, who is a Grammy winner with her husband saxophonist Paul Cohen. They both live in Oaxaca...photo dull :(.

'Besame Mucho' - Excelente Cancion y Cantante
I could not believe all of the great groups that I heard this night at the café. Oaxaca has really great musicians. They begin playing instruments before they begin grade school.
