"Measure often, cut once." Punjabi proverb

Alaska and Northwest Canada Introduction:

The next adventure, expedition, journey, will start June 2. We will drive across the United States, stopping at the Badlands, Rushmore, then to Mt. Rainer, Seattle, and Bellingham, Washington. From there we will board the Inside Passage Alaskan Ferry, getting off at Ketchikan, Wrangle, Sitka, Juneau, Haines and then Skagway. We’ll be spending a few days at each place. From Skagway, we will drive over to Seward along part of the Alaskan Highway, then to Homer and Kenai Peninsula. Then up to Anchorage for a few days, then to Denali National Park for a week, next to Fairbanks, where we will fly up above to the Gates of the Arctic National Park, which is above the Arctic Circle and then ride a bus back to Fairbanks. We will take the Top of the World Highway over to Chicken and Eagle and drive down to Dawson Creek, Yukon and end up at Jasper. From there we’ll go to Banff down to Waterton/ Glacier National Park for a week. Then we will spend a week or so in Yellowstone/Grand Teton. We will be back to the ‘Burg around the middle of September. Along the way, we will take a raft trip, a couple boat trips, and do some hiking and see some great scenery. We will also be hiking and doing trail work on sections of our National Scenic Trails the Continual Divide and the Pacific Crest. One day we want to say we have swung a pulaski on every one of them. Another thing, we are curious about how the blog/pictures loads or any feedback about the blog that I could pass on to the Webmaster to help make it better. The mission of the Bothan Taistil Blog is to have our friends travel along with us and enjoy the scenery. But it’s also to help some future traveler plan their trip, so it will be a combination of narration and information.

June 1, Wednesday. We flew out of Vegas late last night, 11:50PM and arrived Pittsburgh, “red-eyed” at (3:30AM) 6:30 EST.
Once home, we began organizing for Alaska. With the laundry humming, we packed for 4 seasons. We have several meals frozen for the trip and I went shopping for perishables. Bob picked up some last minute necessities. By evening we were ready to sleep, and sleep we did.

June 2, Thursday. We packed the RV and were on the road by noon.
The next few days are “drive, drive, drive” days. We hope 500 miles each day. Even with a late start, we managed 500 miles and stopped at a TA, just west of Chicago, for sleep. The truck stops are very bright and smell of

diesel fuel. We did sleep, some, but were ready to hit the road before 6 AM .

June 3, Friday. Today’s drive was through Wisconsin and Minnesota. With our early start we were able to stop late afternoon. Bob spotted a sign, just before S.D., called l Blue Mound State Park (SP). We got the last camping spot with electric hook-up, and learned this is Buffalo Weekend in Luverne. Some big holiday weekend, with art displays, camping, and buffalo burgers!
It was good to get out and walk after the two days of driving. We headed out to see the herd of bison. The park has over 50 buffalo. The interesting pinkish rock we see, is Sioux quartzite This SP is famous in this area for rock climbing. It, also, has some interesting hiking trails, a lake, and a paved biking trail. Lots of families were here to celebrate the festivities, however, the weather forecast isn’t good.
We enjoyed a pleasant meal at our picnic table, did some reading and had a shower in a brand new facility. Life on the road is OK.
