Little Bohemia
Manitowish Waters Contributing Photographer: Michael Weinstein
Our last ride of the week is a ride to Manitowish Waters, WI, where the Little Bohemia Lodge is located.
http://littlebohemialodge.com/ I figured we would have lunch there since the food is excellent at the lodge. We took Trail 8 heading west and once again, the trails were stupendous. It's just amazing, every trail perfect. The weather was beautiful, too: sunny and the upper 30's. Gotta love March riding. The ride there ended up being 62 miles of rolling hills and woods and, once again, Trail 8 is one of my favorites.
When we arrived at Little Bohemia, we had a bit of a surprise.
This isn't the first time I've been skunked by Little Bohemia not being open when I thought they were. According to their website, they are open for lunch on Friday. Dawn concurred and she usually knows about these things better than the guys do. I was disappointed because I find it one of the more interesting places around here. In 1934, John Dillinger and his gang were holed up at the lodge and the FBI was tipped off about their whereabouts. The G Men
set up an ambush and it became a big shootout. Dillinger and his guys escaped through the woods by climbing out of a back window and running through the woods. There are a lot of bullet holes in the walls and original window panes. The restaurant and bar still look the same as in 1934. Oh well, hopefully next time. Michael gave me just one admonition; "call ahead."
We gassed up and the attendant recommended going to the Pea Patch Saloon for lunch, so that's where we headed. After a good meal, I thought we would ride up into Michigan from Manitowish Waters on Trail 11. We were both a little tired after 5 straight days of riding so we then rode Michigan Trail 2 back to Watersmeet and then the final 10 miles back to the Gateway. That gave us another 165 miles of riding anyway.
When we got back to the Gateway, Michael suggested we make a couple speed runs on the road next to the airport behind the Gateway.
We loaded up the sleds on the trailer and then decided to go
Interesting Winter Footwear
At the Bear Trap Restaurant. to the Bear Trap for dinner. It WAS tini time! Michael enjoyed a couple martinis and we noticed that a young woman sitting at the table next to us was wearing what I call "stripper shoes" with 6 inch heels. Michael had another name for them that I can't mention here. I was wondering how you walk through the snow with those shoes when Michael (bolstered by his two martinis) went over to her and asked if he could take a picture of her shoe. She was amused by his interest and after taking the picture she told him that he should buy shoes like that for his wife. She told him that he would really appreciate how good they look with her feet straight up in the air!
In our week together, I wanted to show Michael as much of the best riding in this area as possible. For the week we rode about 850 miles. We've ridden some of the best trails around and visited a lot of interesting places. But we just scratched the surface. There are so many destinations to go to and great trails to ride that you could spend a lifetime of riding
up here and still have new places to ride. The Upper Peninsula is ranked in the snowmobile surveys in magazines as the #1 snowmobile destination and the northwoods of Wisconsin is usually in the top 3. I was hoping that Michael would not be disappointed with my riding area and based on his numerous comments about the table top trails, I know he was very impressed. So much so that he is talking about towing his snowmobile here for a two week visit next winter.

great trails, tales and tails
This was truly a snowmobile adventure to marvel at. Bob is such a great "tour guide" he should start his own tour guiding business as he knows all the best places to go to. Lots of history in these parts . Too bad we or maybe at least I didn't get that girl with the high heels email address. LOL
