Sunset at Port HuonLeaving Hobart we decided to stay at Port Huon a central location for exploring the Huon valley.
We found accommodation overlooking the river with views of the Hartz mountains - very scenic!
It was nice to sit outside with a glass of wine watching the sunset over the mountains in the distance.
For our first day exploring the valley we drove from Port Huon to Dover via Police Point and Surveyors Bay. The scenery across the Huon River estuary was superb. We saw different birds en route including a Kookaburra. We enjoyed a fine walk along a deserted beach in Dover a very pretty village followed by a picnic by the jetty. Then we made our way to Southport and on to Ida Bay for a cup of tea and cake at the railway station cafe!
We had enjoyed the coastal route so much on the outward journey we followed the same route back towards Port Huon.
Geeveston was an interesting small town with woodcarvings of some celebrated local inhabitants.We had a walk around the town and were delighted to see a duck billed platypus in the river!

Huon Valley Port Huon through Huonville to Cygnet via the coast road. Cygnet was a quiet village with a few small shops and a restaurant. We continued South to Abels Bay and then to Eggs and Bacon Bay (reminding me of my breakfast). The sea views were lovely across the mouth of the Huon River and the Entrecasteaux Channel. We drove to Woodbridge then Kettering with great views of Bruny Island. At the village of Snug we stopped for a short 4km walk through the forest to the Snug Waterfall. The walk was very enjoyable but unfortunately the waterfall was only a trickle over a near vertical rock face. We heard a lot of birdsong in the forest and saw a wallaby.
To end a super day we had some lamb and chicken tapas with a good bottle of red wine at the Kermandie Hotel in Port Huon.

Bruny Island
I'm impressed with these beautiful photos but a bit sorry that you didn't get to Bruny Island - the home of Dr Wooreddy. M xx
