No Dilmah but plenty of BOH

I was pretty surprised to spot 3 ‘ladies of the night’ still plying their trade out front, obviously a slow Tuesday night.

The 4:50am banging on our bedroom door this morning was not necessary. We opened the door to a weary-eyed receptionist saying our bus was here to go to Perhentian Islands. Two problems with this – 1, we were going to the Cameron Highlands and 2, more importantly we didn’t leave for another 3 hours!

Later that morning....... now fully awake ready for the bus, I took the opportunity to grab some snacks from the local shop. I was pretty surprised to spot 3 ‘ladies of the night’ still plying their trade out front, obviously a slow Tuesday night.

We arrived in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands fairly unscaved after a pretty standard mini bus ride after several crossings onto the wrong side of the road into cars, trucks & fellow buses. The first thing that hits you about this area is that it is just like a small alpine village with Tandoori Houses, rather than Swiss coffee shops.

Our guesthouse is a converted apartment with around 8 rooms and 2 shared bathrooms, we immediately booked a ½ day tour for the following day that would take us up to the top of Cameron Highland’s highest mountain and through the BOH (Best of Highland) tea plantation.

Our tour started at 9am, first was a trip to the top of the mountain and a short and very educational walk through the ‘Mossy Forest’, although similar to school most of the information has not been well stored. We were taken through the tea plantation to be shown how it gets from a nice looking plant into a satisfying drink. As we were at the plantation we felt it would be rude if we didn’t sample a tea with a side of scones and jam.

We were then treated to 30 minutes at a Butterfly Farm which may just well be the highlight of our trip so far...or maybe not. Along with 2 other people in our tour, a Canadian couple who have been living in Melbourne we decided to dismiss our driver and walk the rest of the way back to Tanha Rata through the forest. The walk started with a stop at a Strawberry Farm and some tasting, before chatting about travelling over some Nasi Goreng.

The bush walk was a bit of a guess at stages as we hadn’t mastered the Malaysian language, but sure enough after finding a waterfall we were told about we knew we had hit gold and landed in the town 5 minutes later. Good tour, great company, sensational butterflies. And with that, our short visit to the highlands was quickly coming to an end with another early bus the following morning.
