Today was my 1st full day in the 3-4 year old room at Blinky's Corner. I learned that Australian preschool is much more laid back than American preschool which I had heard before coming to Australia. There isn't much structure and most of their time is spent playing. I did not see any educational lessons taught today, but maybe there will be some in the future. My room is full of strong personalities and quite a few children have behavior issues so it will keep me on my toes for the next few weeks! Our first week is spent mostly just getting to know the children. Today, I found out who my 5 focus children are so I started taking notes on them, but mostly I just played with the children and helped the teacher where she needed it. I am not sure how it will go when we are required to teach our lessons because from the looks of things, it doesn't look like the children are used to being taught formal lessons. I guess I will just go with the flow and see what happens!
I had a bit of a rough morning with being home sick, but talking to my mom helped a lot. I also got to talk to Carter after school which made me feel a lot better. I have gotten to talk to family and friends more than I thought I would so I am happy about that! Today, I decided I need to be tough and have a positive attitude for the rest of the trip. Let's hope I can follow through with that goal 😊
April and I are going to meet Kelly and Sarah at a local bar tonight after dinner to have a few drinks! It will be interesting to see what Australian night life is like. We have already heard that drinks are spendy here so that's kind of a bummer, but it will be fun to go out and meet up with the other Stout girls!
