Hi everyone,
I've not been writing on the blog for a while because I was quite busy and a bit lazy to be honest!
But I'm back. I'll stay in Suring, a small town in the north east of Thailand for 3 or 4 days, to catch up with the blog, work on my photos and take a bit of rest.
So! Last post was about Songkran in Chiang Mai, which was quite amazing. I decided to stay in Chiang Mai after the Songkran to enjoy the town being dry!!! The town is really quiet and nice and full of impressive temples. Watching my pictures, I realize that I don't have any pictures of the town itself... that'll be a good excuse to go back there!
But anyway, I had a fun time visiting the temples, trying to practice meditation early in the morning in some quiet temples (and I'm not really good at it!). Chiang Mai is a really nice city to visit and is definitely worth a visit even if it's not Songkran.
Then I went to Chang Rai, a smaller town 200 km north of Chiang Mai. I went there especially to see
the white temple. Wat Rong Khun (the real name of this temple) is different than the other temples in Thailand. This temple, build by Chalermchai Kositpipat (a Thai visual artist known for using Buddhist imagery in his art), is completely white, instead of the gold and red of traditional temples and includes the use of glass. The white color stands for Lord Buddha’s purity; the white glass stands for Lord Buddha’s wisdom that "shines brightly all over the Earth and the Universe." But more than that, there are some quite disturbing details in the temple: for example the lake of hands that you need to cross to enter in the temple. In the temple, there is mural paintings that include modern images, like Neo from the Matrix, Spiderman, cell phone, Batman and other movies characters (unfortunately it's not possible to take picture inside the temple, so you'll have to go there to see it!). This is a strange and magnificent temple.
I have a funny story about life as a traveler: In Chiang Rai, I slept in a dormitory as often (being the cheapest option), and on the second night, a guy was sleeping in the bed next to
mine. I was watching a movie on my computer with my headset, to avoid annoying my neighbor. When my movie finished, I turned off my computer and set up to sleep when I heard some weird sounds. Then I realized that the guy next to me was watching porn movies with the sound on!!! I have nothing against porn movies, but to be honest, I will have prefer not knowing what the guy was watching!!! But that's one of the inconvenient of living on the road, you don't choose who you share your dorm with! So I turn the other way and try to fall asleep as quick as possible (which was not that easy!)
That's it for now. The next post will be about Songkran in Phra Padaeng (south of Bangkok) which is celebrated 2 weeks after the rest of the country.
Until then, take care and enjoy life!
