Hi!
On Monday, we drove through Louisiana and made our way to the Big Easy (New Orleans) for the night. Being in Louisiana is always emotional for me as it is where Mike brought me for our honeymoon and I feel an undeniable connection to my Cajun cousins out there. Our route had us going through Lafayette, Bâton Rouge and New Orleans, with a pit stop in Breaux Bridge where we spent most of our honeymoon. It was nice to drive through the different bayous and see familiar sights.
I was determined to eat some crawfish while I was there, so we stopped in a little town for lunch and found a seafood restaurant. In Louisiana, eating crawfish is about the same as eating fried clams at home. During the season, they are everywhere, they are fresh and they are good! So I ordered a crawfish platter. You will notice in the picture that there is a potato and piece of corn on the cob in the middle. Crawfish are a finger food (like peel and eat shrimp, I guess), and the potato and corn are cooked in the water along with them, without any eating utensils. That's fine
for the corn. But for the potato, you have to wait a little until it cools down so you can break it up in smaller pieces with your fingers and run it along the bottom of the tray to pick up the crawfish juice and spices. Yum! The first time I ordered a tray of seafood like that at a restaurant, I asked the server for some utensils, and she looked at me kinda funny and said "sure" with a bit of hesitation in her voice. I understood why when I saw other people eating their potatoes with their hands. Ha! Ha! As you will see in the picture of my thumb, I'm out of practise when it comes to opening up crawfish. I found that the spices were stinging my fingers a little. I understood why when I went to the washroom to wash my hands. My thumbs were torn to shreds! They healed well, though!
After lunch, we continued on our way to New Orleans, where we were spending the night. Of course, we couldn't pass up on a night on Bourbon Street for some good food and good music. So after checking into our hotel, we
headed towards the French Quarter and found Bourbon St. The first time we were there, we asked our hotel clerk where the street was located, and he said "follow the smell". He wasn't kidding. In the evening, Bourbon Street stinks! Too many people drinking way too much makes for a funky smell. But we did find a nice little spot to have some supper and afterwards we walked around, stopping in different bars to listen to the different bands. Near the end, we found an amazing blues band in one of the bars. Mike chuckled a little when he noticed, at one point, that the drummer was playing with one hand and texting with the other while they were playing Buddy Guy's famous Hoochie Coochie Man - and doing a good job of it. LOL. Mike misses playing, I think.
When we had had enough, we went back to our hotel, planning on going to the French Quarter in the morning to visit the French Market.
