The Skylight One Hanson Flea Market
This will be worth a return trip to the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. La Moda Lisa, one of our favorite Capital Region consignment shops, invited us for a motor coach trip to New York with a Flea Market Theme. The company was great my sister, Zita; my aunt Ellen; and my cousin Patti. The price was amazing $25 for the round trip on a comfy bus with games (I won a prize), movies (The Bridesmaid and The Help), snacks, and a $10 gift certificate for La Moda Lisa. The rainy, windy weather did not deter us and just goes to show "rain or shine...we'll have a good time!"
The description of several flea markets and our new find, “Eataly,” a fun foodie market place follow after the "jump." We found a small Artsy Vintage Flea Market in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn near the Skylight One Flea Market (surprising closed that particular Sunday – lessons learned call ahead these places hop around). Zita found a purple snakeskin clutch that will go well with the purple pumps she found earlier in the year at La Moda Lisa. She and Patti also picked up handmade leather bound books with hand crafted papers - very handsome and suitable as journals, guest books, sketch books, etc. Lisa,
our hostess, had advised us to "haggle" saying, "These vendors expect it." We practiced our bargaining skills -"Would you take $___?" And had fun making offers on our “deals” throughout the day.
From Brooklyn, we headed for downtown Manhattan to the Flat Iron District and spent a fair amount of time and money in the Antiques Garage (also, described below). Among us we came home with scarves, beautiful vintage leather gloves and other small items. I was the big winner (spender?) and nabbed a silver plate "crumber set," a couture rain coat, and a large red leather purse.
Tired and hungry by 2:30, we happened upon a NYPD officer (in street clothes) at the Garage Flea Market and asked about a place to eat and get a glass of wine. We hit the jackpot. We were two short blocks from the newly opened "Eataly" at 200 Fifth Ave. This place reminded me of a fancier version of the large indoor Italian market on Arthur Avenue (the NEW Little Italy in the Bronx). I also was like a Farmers' Market we like in Montreal with its wonderful restaurants and separate shopping areas for sweets, pastas, cheeses, chocolates, gelato, meat,
fish (there were freshly shucked Wellfleet (Cape Cod) oysters to sample, produce, flowers, home goods like my new T Shaped Crepe Spreader and those rubbery cupcake pans and more including several counters where one could order pizzas or sandwiches. There is even an in-house Italian cooking school! What could be better on a rainy day in New York than sipping Italian wine and at one of several themed Italian restaurants and browsing for Italian gourmet staples after? So glad this international foodie hang out has finally hit home!
From the web page
www.eataly.com Eataly, the largest artisanal Italian food and wine marketplace in the world, is finally here in New York. Two years after Oscar Farinetti opened his groundbreaking food and wine market in Turin, Italy, he has teamed up with Mario Batali, Joe Bastianich, and Lidia Matticchio Bastianich of Batali-Bastianich (B&B) Hospitality Group to transform a 50,000 square - foot space in the Flatiron District into New York City’s premier culinary Mecca.
The marketplace located at 200 Fifth Avenue (the former Toy Building) is the city's ultimate destination for food lovers to shop and taste and savor – an extravaganza includes a premier retail center for
Italian delicacies and wine, a culinary educational center, and a diverse slate of boutique eateries. This gourmand's delight features cured meats and cheeses, fruits and vegetables, fresh meats, fresh fish, handmade pasta, desserts and baked goods and coffees.

brooklynflea.com Easily one of the most popular flea markets is the Brooklyn Flea. Open both Saturday and Sundays (10am-6pm), it draws quite an eclectic crowd of buyers and vendors. Furnish your apartment, pick up your favorite pair of cowboy boots, or just come check out some of the latest artwork and jewelry from local artists. Located in the historic Williamsburg Savings Bank, it houses over 100 vendors on three floors, including the bank’s former vault on the lower level and the beautiful mezzanine up one flight of stairs.

Highly recommend this foodie experience. Very close to the Antique Garage.
from both markets for $1. Antiques Garage has been attracting customers since 1994 and is known to carry some of the most treasured items from the 18th Century. The vendors here seem to know their stuff and will probably tell you how that pair of silver earrings or silverware made it to their booth. Digging through this market is both challenging and fun due to its abundance of rare goods and number of knowledgeable merchants. Sift through Victorian pieces, Kennedy pins, 40 year-old comic books, and various antique beads to make your own vintage jewelry. Feel like you’re part of your own Antiques Road Show by stopping by this impressive market. Open Saturday and Sunday from 9am-5pm.
