Quintana Roo was definitely the most beautiful place we visited on our cruise. The beaches were prisitne and the towns were clean and the weather was fabulous. The ship docked in Cozumel but we hopped on a ferry soon after arriving at the island to go on our excursion to Tulum to see the Mayan Ruins. The ferry ride was about 45 minutes of naeseating waves to arrive in Playa Del Carmen.

As soon as we arrived, I wanted to explore this beautiful place, hearing the calls of exotic birds and wildlife all around me. But we had no time to look around as we were quickly herded onto buses heading for Tulum. From what I saw of Playa Del Carmen I would definitely recommend visiting it and I wish I couldve spent more time there. The bus ride to Tulum was long but the tour guide was entertaining and the country side was gorgeous.

When we arrived in Tulum we were ushered into a giant museum type place which ended up being a like a giant store with overpriced jewelry and souveniers. After a while we got to go out to the Ruins, which were totally amazing. As the plaza came into view everyone ooed and ahhhed collectively. It was an awesome and humbling experience to be standing in a place so ancient. The tour was very informative and fun. The tour ended on a cliff above the beach. After the tour we got to explore Tulum. We bought many soveniers there. The shops had very nice things and it was a low pressure experience, although it took some work to get a fair deal on the many items we purchased. In fact, we lost track of time and were a little late getting back to the bus. Ooops.

After returning to Cozumel we had afew hours to spend there. We shopped for a while and then wanted to get some dinner. We looked at afew places, but they were expensive and seemed unauthentic. Funnyclown speaks Spanish, so he asked a couple local guys where they would go to eat dinner. They looked at eachother and named a place which they said was 2 blocks away. We took off in that direction, passing many of the same type of places we had just been to. We had not yet reached the block where the place they recommended was when we saw a little taqueria called Tako Rock. There was not one tourist in the joint and they had dollar tacos! Score! The funny thing was that we kept walking for a minute to check out the place they recommended. There were no locals there and there burritos were like 15 dollars. So we basically stumbled on the place we were looking for by accident! Tako rock was great and Funnyclown made friends with the locals that were there and the owner by making them balloons and talking to them in Spanish. We got tons of food and two Mexican cokes and two beers for under 20 dollars. Cozumel was very clean and nice and it felt very safe to walk around in. I would love to have a week in Quintana Roo to really get a good look at it. Truly it was the most beautiful place I have ever been.

As you will see in the next few photos, these Mayan Ruins are now ruled by the Iguanas. They are very photogenic and not the least bit camera shy!

I have been thinking of going to Mexico and then further down in South-America in the future.. The goal is, probably, to drive the pan-American highway during a few months.. Your blog entries are truly inspirational and makes me want me to go there too! [First of all; I am a sucker when it comes to 'wanting to travel / explore', secondly; love the hair too.. Red is the thing - 'innit =D ]
