07.00 Hours Saturday 17 March

I don’t know why I jump out of bed at 7 in the morning as it’s a waste of time because India sleeps till 8 or 9.

Maybe now I know

I go into the bathroom and after brushing my teeth then there he is.

A cockroach. Not a baby either.

I am surprised it’s taken this long to see one, But more surprised as where I am staying is a family home. It’s not dirty and I don’t think that they are associated with dirt anyway.

So a Mexican standoff ensues, but there is only going be one winner. He makes the first the move, I jump and shout like a girl. He knows he got the upper hand. He stops. He reminds me in my endless seconds of panic of an AT-AT from Star Wars; his legs braced and ready, where are the SAS when English Nationals abroad are cornered by a greater foe.

The only way to beat him like the AT-AT is to fire some rope round his legs and bring him to a standstill.

I have no rope and my X-Wing fighter is at home, and do I have the aim of Skywalker anyway.

He goes again towards sanctuary under the sink. I whack him with my sandal and stand back to see the empty floor and look at the sole to see the crushed foe. I am ready to punch the air victorious.

There’s nothing on the sandal and there he is about to disappear under the sink.

He looks at me with distain, a look that says: a Birkenstock BEHAVE. He’s gone.

Anyway after that I drink some anti-septic hand wash to steady myself and head out for the day.

I am off to Amer some 8 miles out of Jaipur. I walk up to the main road after awhile decide to take a rick to the Hawa Mahal ( The Palace of the Winds) from where I can catch the No5 bus to Amer.

The rick driver drops me at the Palace and I walk round the corner where the bus will go from. It’s a building site no sign of a bus stop. But a bus pulls up alongside me and the driver opens his hands. It’s my bus Ion I jump. 15 rups to Amer.

I get off at the Palace stop and buy some water and head towards the Palace , buy my ticket and in I go.

After a while I team up with Sylvia from Brazil and we spend the rest of the day together. She came in a rick and after the palace we go up to the fort, which was killing in the heat but we are only here once.

We head back down to the rick driver stops on the way back and we have lunch.

The rick driver takes her to some shops and then to a monkey temple, bit touristy for me but I tag along.

He drops us in town and I show Sylvia the markets I visited yesterday, back to the rick say goodbye and back to the guesthouse for a beer.

I am out on my feet. A good Day.

A cockroach at 7am, a peck on the cheek at 7pm from a girl from Brazil.

Just another day of contrast in Mother India

Namaste
