On the road
View from the front seat of the bus driving to Shamain. We hit the road again this morning early to take both girls back to the clinic to have their TB skin test read. Rose had to have a chest x-ray but since she was showing positive. The x-ray showed she was fine but it took forever for the Radiologist to let us know, well he didn't but one of our rep's got after him to find out (make no mistake they can be fiery when they need to be). We weren't really worried about the x-ray until the dude took off like he needed to go talk to someone about what he saw. Seems it was more like he decided to go for coffee instead.
This trip wasn't like the rest of the road trips this past week. There were enough couples and kids that we had to take a Greyhound size bus. From what Jocelyn told us there were a total of 50 couples that checked in last night. Only 11 of those are working with CCAI but I'm sure glad we weren't in that group trying to get checked in. You could sure tell their were a bunch of newbies this morning at the breakfast buffet. I feel
Shamian Island
This is a interesting place. I can call them newbies since this is our 3
rd Saturday in China. We're becoming seasoned I guess.
We finished up at the clinic with time to spare for browsing around. We did find the White Swan, the place that we stayed the last time. Most of the windows were covered with plywood so I guess the renovations are still on-going. We were sad to find the noodle shop we feel in love with had changed to a small kids dress shop. Oh well, nothing stays the same forever.
If you're ever in Guangzhou be sure to take a ride over to Shamian Island. The mixture of old British and French designed buildings and the gardens are really something to see. I managed to get a couple of snapshots but it started raining pretty good so we head from shelter. Speaking of the weather what a change from yesterday. It was hot and humid, today it's cold and raining. Sounds like the weather back home I've been hearing about.
Today must have been take wedding pictures day or something. There were bride and groom looking people all over the place along with a herd of photographers. Kathy
The clinic
This is were everyone gets checked that's applying a US visa told us most of them probably are already a couple or married but they were there to take the “offical” photos for relatives and such. Whatever the reason there were a lot of couples and it made it really tough for our bus driver to get off the island since they had different routes out blocked off. I will say with a certainty, I am NOT cut out for driving here! I've never seen a driver get such a big bus through some of the tightest places in my life as this guy did today.
One of the couples from our original group were scheduled to fly out today about 12:30 so we said our goodbyes this morning. Hope they have a good flight. The other couple leave tomorrow. Hate to see our group go a piece at a time but that's just how it worked out. At least we'll get to have supper with them tonight before they fly out. Jenny really fell in love with grandpa, he is a very interesting person.
Well we braved up today and tried the corn one of the street vendors was selling. Several times we've seen people walking by with
The girls
On our short walk before it started raining again. an ear we decided to brave it. Figure there's steam coming out of the kettle she had it cooking in the water should be OK. We'll find out tomorrow or not I guess. It sure was good though. My mom would have loved it, the kernels were about as full as you could get without it being tuff. None of our ears had the first bug bite, not sure if that's a good thing or not. It was interesting to watch this woman shuck the ears since she cooks it in the husk. I couldn't strip on that good and quick.
Now Jasmine wants to try the chestnuts another vendor is cooking in a wok on the back of his bike. Never thought about how to transport a wok on a bike let alone cook with one on a bike. Both these people hang out in front of the Micky D's, people come out of there all the time with a cheeseburger in one hand and a ear of corn in the other, not a combo I ever thought of.
We're supposed to take a tour tomorrow, hope the weather is better then today. Still haven't seen the
