Hello everyone,
I just spent 5 days in paradise! Let me tell you how the paradise is.
So last time I was leaving Melaka. I took a bus to Mersing (roughly 5 hours). Mersing is a really little town with nothing to visit. There are 2 main streets and…. That’s it. This is just the stop over to go to Pulau Tioman (Tioman island). So obviously to go there, you have to take a boat (that’s an island after all!) and that’s already really great. On the way, you can see some beautiful landscapes, feel the wind in your hair… You know what I’m talking about.
Then the island: this is a 39 km long and 12 km wide and is a paradise for scuba diving and snorkelling. The particularity of this island is there are as many inhabitants than cats!
What you can do there is simple: lay on the beach, swim in clear and warm blue water, walk in the jungle, meet monkeys, swim with turtles, sharks, beautiful fishes, have some great evenings with the travellers and the locals… Have a really good time!
Let me tell you about my 5 days there:
I stay
on the Salang beach (the beach on the north of the island), following the advice of a really nice and efficient lady from the ticket office in Mersing.
The day I arrived I spent the afternoon snorkelling with a group of really friendly Belgian and a really good guide, Hashim. After a ride on a fast boat jumping on the waves (really great), Hashim took us to 4 different points to see some gorgeous fishes and corals.
The next day, I decided to play Indiana Jones and to go walking in the jungle. There is a trail between Salang and another beach called the ABC beach. That was so great!!! The walk is not really easy. At the beginning there is a difficult hill but this is really worth it! I saw some beautiful birds, touched a snake (thinking it was a piece of tree!), saw some monkeys!!! Let me tell you about them: I saw some when I was walking in the jungle and I saw some on the beach. Those on the beach actually stole my biscuits in my bag! I found a really nice empty beach, so I drop my bag and jump in the water
for a nice swim, when suddenly I turned around and saw 2 monkeys next to my bag, looking inside it. So I run back to the beach (in the water it is not that easy!) and the monkeys run away, but not without my packet of biscuits. But they didn’t run away really far, and I did manage to take some really good pictures of them, so I didn’t mind about the biscuit too much. Then on my way back, I saw a big group of them on a rock, so I started to take some pictures again But after a bit, they were probably tired of me, one of them jump on a tree just next to me and started screaming at me and showing me his teeth to scared me. And you know what? It worked!!!! I didn’t ask for more and left them in peace (quite quickly actually!) But at the end it was a really good walk, exhausting (never sweat that much!) but great!
Then I had another day snorkelling: but this time we were looking for sharks and turtles and saw them! I saw Nemo, had sharks swimming around me (but they are nice sharks,
so I was ok. Except maybe, when one of them swam straight at me…) and swam with a turtle, stuck on its back. That was a wonderful time. I thank my guide Hashim for that.
I had a lazy day (following a small hangover!): simply swam in the blue clear water, lay on the beach reading a book, had ice-cream in one of the bar, talked with the people there… What a life!
Then on my last day, I did some scuba diving. The sensation of being able to swim really with the fishes is really great. That was the perfect way to end my time on the island.
But there are also all the evenings spent having fun, taking the boat under the stars to go party to another beach (I loved that!), drinking (not too much), dancing, laughing with the people met there, local or other travellers. That was so much fun.
Another thing I really liked here was to live bare foot all the time: that’s a wonderful felling!!!
Then I had to leave the island to go to Kota Kinabalu, and that was an adventure! I was supposed to take the
ferry at 9am. It was 2 hours late, so I left the island around 11am, but then we were stuck in the middle of the sea because there was not enough water to go in the port. So 2 hours to wait again, the time that a small boat came to pick us up. Then I had to take a 3 hours bus to Johor Bahru, waited 2 hours for another 45 minutes bus to take me to the airport, slept in the airport, took a plane the next day, and here I am in Kota Kinabalu in Sabah.
To continue… But don’t forgot to have a look at the pictures below, there are some good one.
A suivre…
