Today we went on the scenic route, and this meant many hours to drive from Medford to Napa. The good news for the little ones is this is their last day with so much driving.

We have now entered California, and with this two main attractions, the Redwood forrests and the Highway 1. Redwoods are these huge trees. I remember them from my childhood, while reading my first Babar comics. This will not mean much for the younger generation, but do you remember Babar driving with his family through the Redwoods?

We first made an impromptu stop on a bridge over the Klamath River. The bridge is around one mile inland from the Pacific Ocean. The local sheriff was there, as well as some hundred people standing on the bridge. Something was happening down there...but what? We parked, and walked back to join the crowd.

Down there in the river, a grey whale was swimming. She must have been 5 meters long. She had been there for nearly a month, at first with her little calf. Her calf had let her alone few days ago to swim back to the Ocean. Sadly, either she will find the exist, or this may be her last trip. But it was pretty impressive to see this giant swimming around in circles. Sad, but a one in a life time witnessing for us I guess.

Later on we stopped in Leggett to experience a 5 usd local attraction...driving our car through a Redwood tree. This one being called the Chandelier Tree. Let me first agree, this is an ecological non-sense to have dig a tunnel in such a magnificent tree. But the tree is still standing, and we were passing by. Nice place also to enjoy one of our numerous family picnic on the West Coast. As you can see, no rain...only sun and blue skies with us. Well, that is valid for all pictures taken more than 3 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Once you reach the shoreline, fogs, low clouds, no rain....and way colder weather is awaiting us each and every single time we try to get closer to the Ocean.

At the end of the day, we made it to Napa...south we are heading...and Napa is our next little stop.

It was a long day on the road, but it was a beautiful day. After the Redwoods, we drove a good part of Highway 1....I mean THE highway 1, and this from it's start! Kids didn't get car sick, but we can agree that we were really lucky it didn't happen. And for me, it was the occasion to have some "rally" driving....The good news being here you don't really overspeed as the road is bending all the time!

So next entry, in the middle of the Vineyards...Napa, here we come!

You are right Jason!
You are right, I did mention it in a preceding blog. We stay only two nights in Las Vegas. What did you do staying a full week in Las Vegas? I love the place, but 48 hours is enough for me at each visit.
