Warnemunde & Rostock, Germany --- July 18,2011

There was a trip to Berlin which we passed on. The trip was exhausting for those that took it, 3 hours on bus to arrive in Berlin and then a 3 hour return tour; with the tour guides talking all the time. Why do they think that they have to talk all the time, some quiet particularly on the return trip would have been appreciated. However upon their return, one of the ship's bands was on deck signing songs from the 60's and 70's with a large number of the staff out to welcome them back as they walked up the gangway.

We chose to go into Rostack which was founded over 800 years ago. The city's medival character is very visible with its old towers, looming forfications, garbled houses from the 1500's. One of our stops were the grounds of the Holy Cross Convent. Ladies be happy you live in this century. In the middle ages if a father did not have enough money for his daughter to get married, she was sent to the convent at around 12 to 14 years old to become a nun. All fo the shops are modern inside but located in buildings constructed in the 1700's. Again we found a church with a tall steeple St. Peter's with a 360 ft. bell tower, which we climbed (200 steps). After walking around town we headed back to the ship but instead of boarding walked into Warnemunde a seaside resort and fishing town. The beach had some very high sand dunes which kids were having a great time sliding down and then trying to climb up. The Baltic is cold and I didn't see many people in the water above their knees. The main street along the canal was jammed with people, restaurants, shops, plus boats in the canal selling cooked fresh fish.

Hi Morgan and Mare, I'm so pleased you are continuing to travel and share your travels with me. I was in Berlin last September and I think you made the right decision not travelling for 3 hours each way. I was on a bus tour there last September when I went to Oberammergau and it was brutal at times being on the bus. Besides Berlin now isn't at interesting as it was during the time I was there in the 70's and the wall was up and there was an East and West. Denmark looked fabulous too. It's still on my bucket list. As you probably know from Carl Ben has asked Brenda, Pat and Robert to lead the "tour" this year so doesn't have a position for me. I'm on my way to Macchu Pichu this October/November with an extension on the Amazon. Thought I'd better go while I felt I could handle the heights. Hope we stay in touch. Perhaps lunch one day.
