HAPPY ROCK!
In Gladstone We spent three lovely nights in Kamsack and were fed delicious hearty home cooking and jumped at the chance to get some major laundry done. BJ’s aunt Gloria and his Grandma were great hosts, they not only filled our bellies but showed us a thing or two about Rummy strategies. We played lots of cards, slept in and even got a good run session in while we were in town.
After getting loaded up with food from Gloria we hit the road and made our way to Manitoba. We decided to head west of Winnipeg for our first campground, considering our best friend Becky is spending the summer in Calgary and was not around to chill with. We seem to have pretty good luck or coincidence so far with this trip, as BJ really wanted to play mini-golf when we left Saskatchewan and wouldn’t you know it, our campground had a little mini-putt. Well, I was put to shame and had to reward BJ with ice cream from the snack shack.
From Winnipeg we drove into Ontario and spent a lovely couple of hours walking around Kenora. What a beautiful area. Kenora sits right on Lake of the Woods, which contains
thousands of small islands in the lake. Unfortunately BJ and I did not spend the night camping on the lake, but the next time we come through the area we will definitely make the plan to stay.
Driving through the first part of Ontario was lovely. The amount of little lakes, and huge lakes all lining the highway was gorgeous. We really enjoyed the drive, although the speed limit is a little slow, 90km/hr, driving at this pace sure makes an already large province even larger. We spent a night in Thunder Bay where we visited the Terry Fox monument; it is a great statue for such a great Canadian.
After Thunder Bay we drove along the shores of Lake Superior to Sault Ste Marie, stopping to enjoy the views and dip our hands and feet into the first Great Lake. The lake is massive, looking to me more like the ocean strait between Victoria and Vancouver.
Leaving Sault Ste Marie we spent Canada Day in Sudbury and enjoyed fireworks and entertainment on the lakeshore near the Science North building. In the morning we treated ourselves to breakfast, a hair cut for BJ and took in the mine tour at
the Big Nickel. Sudbury is a nickel rich area where mining is abundant and traces its way through the landscape and history, it ranks in the top 3 producers worldwide for extraction/production of Nickel.
We left Sudbury and made our way to another icon of Canada- Niagara Falls. We have spent the last 3 days here, enjoying amazing weather, taking in the falls and riding the Maid of the Mist and having a glass or 4 of wine in the local wineries. We toured the Jackson-Triggs winery this morning, it is one of the few winery tours that actually take your through their production facility, so it earns 2 thumbs up from us! We then spent the next couple of hours in Niagara-on-the-Lake, a beautiful town! The houses are so well kept and Main Street boasts cafes, shopping and dining worth a visit. This gem of a place is a must see if you make it here.
Tomorrow we are going to brave driving into Toronto, where we have caved and booked ourselves a hotel for 2 nights. Just couldn’t imagine trying to find camping anywhere near town. Wish us luck that highways and traffic don’t get the best of
us!
Happy Travels!
