Toronto to Belize

They want to go home

Joe and I began talking about this trip just before Christmas, and easily convinced his brother, Ben and sister-in-law, Sarah to come too. This trip was a bit of a home-coming for the boys, as they lived in Belize for about 9 months with their family 20 years ago.
I was excited not only for a holiday from work, but to get to experience something that was so big in the Bilton's lives.

Park n' Fly

After waking up way too early in Bolton, Joe and I met Ben and Sarah at the Park n' Fly in Toronto, and headed over to the airport. I was feeling pretty nauseous from lack of sleep, but nothing a couple of gravol couldn't help. Our two flights were good, no problems at all, and the sun was shining when we arrived.

Clown car rental

Ben had arranged for a car rental for the week, and when the guy behind the counter checked our reservation, he litterally started to laugh at the thought that the four of us would fit in the little 4x4 we had reserved. Luckily, he had a friend at another company, and she

found us a Suzuki Grand Vitara which was perfect (minus the broken CD Player).

Belize City - Hotel Belmopan

I resereved a room for our first night in Belize City. We checked in, freshened up, then took a walk around the city to check it out. Belize City is apparently where 99%!o(MISSING)f Belize's crime occurs. Eventhough the sun was shinning, I did feel a bit uncomfortable being harrassed by some of the locals for taxi tours, hair braiding, statues, jewlery etc. It's as if they can smell fresh meat...maybe it's the complete lack of tan that gives new tourists away...

We wondered around, took a few pictures, and enjoyed our first Belikin beers at the Iguqna Bar right on the harbour.

After searching for some Recardo Spice for Joe's dad, we went back to the hotel to relax a bit before dinner.

Walk to dinner....errr....let's drive

We didn't have much luck with our guide books dinner suggestions, quickly discovering that many were already closed at around 6 on a Saturday night!?? We had been warned not to walk around at night, so we decided to drive back to the more touristy area by the water. We chose a restaurant at the Radisson Hotel which served it's meals on a hot stone. It was pretty delicious, and quite a fun experience!

Sleepy girls

We got back to the hotel around 8ish, and Sarah and I went pretty much straight ot bed while the boys enjoyed the warm evening air on the front deck. The room was pretty hot, and the beds were right beside the windows, which may seem nice, but it meant that the curtains blew right in your face. That problem was quickly solved by moving the beds to the middle of the room!

Life in Belize
I grew up in Belize and half of my family still live there. So much has changed in the 20 years since I've left, but Belize will always mean home to me. I wish you could have visited back when I lived there, it was a totally different world. Belize is an absolutely beautiful country, but with the tourist trade, I believe that it has lost some of that beauty.
