Sacramento definitely not a desert

Sacramento would not have been on my list of places to visit while in California. Visiting with my cousin is what has brought us here, but Sacramento has been a pleasant surprise. The weather has been rainy most days, so it has limited our outdoor activities. The weather is unusual for the amount of rain at this time of year.

We had planned a shorter amount of time here, but this is also a place where we are picking up mail and packages. There was a delay with one item and we needed to wait for it before moving on, so we settled in and waited. I’ve discovered how much I enjoy spending time in an area and just being there for a while. Rushing and seeing things is a different way to travel and certainly has it’s place in the way we do things. But we can settle in and feel the rhythms of the place and get a different sense than if we are in motion all the time. The mail delay enabled us to spend more time with my cousin and to complete a xmas stocking for her before leaving.

We camped at Cal Expo Fairgrounds in Sacramento. It’s a black top lot with full hookups. There is a dog run and a club house. The scenery is nothing special, but we were content for the time we stayed here. The park is centrally located and at $35 a night it’s a better deal than others in the area. The one day we were able to go biking, the campground was a convenient location to the extensive bike trails that are available. We did move to boondocking at Thunder Valley Casino for our last two nights in the area.

Sacramento is California’s capital, so we visited the state capital building and took a tour. We caught the end of one tour and the beginning of the next tour. We were able to experience two different guides and there was a big difference between them with the one being much more educational and entertaining while engaging her audience to participate.

The bike trail was fun and extensive. We headed in toward the city rather than further out toward Folsom Lake. We had to detour from our planned route due to flooding. Discovery Island Park was partially flooded and a few days after our visit it

was closed because the flooding was worse.

Old Sac was a fun area to walk around. We arrived there after the St Patrick’s day parade, so it was even more crowded than usual. We had dinner at Fanny Ann’s Saloon which was fun and crowded and the burgers were just what we needed.

Other things we did in the area was to visit Cache Creek Casino, Nevada City, Jackson and Grass Valley. We also ended up having our water heater replaced due to more problems. We've had a long history of periodic problems and floods, so we are now enjoying a fully functioning and non leaking brand new water heater. It’s time to move on and continue with our trip. It was wonderful spending time with my cousin Anne. The older I get the more I appreciate family and the shared history. Also as a child it was always exciting and fun to visit with her whether it was in Milford or Ojai. I recall those visits and that time fondly and am glad I was able to visit her at her home in Sacramento.

Anne's mom made the original xmas stockings back in the early 1950's. Here's my version.

Apparently in Jackson they have Faygo parties and Rock and Rye is the most popular flavor. It was a surprise to see.

Hi
Hi Lynne, I enjoyed reading your blog. It sounds like you have enjoyed your winter. We can't believe how fast it has gone, with us enjoying Spring already. We have a lot of fun down here in our winter mobile home in Florida. The park here has so many activities going on. Bob is playing bocce now. He really enjoys it. I will do water aerobics again tomorrow. Take care, Connie
