Dome of the Rock
We saw the dome through an arch as we walked into the old city from King Herod's Gate. Today, I went to Jerusalem again. We heard the crow of a rooster. When we looked up, the rooster was sitting right above us…in a lemon tree! There were birds everywhere. I bought a Pisanke egg from a man selling goods in the Muslim Quarter. We saw a beautiful mosque with a turquoise top. Then, we went to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It is said that Jesus died there. Some people took one of their personal objects and touched it to the exact stone where it was thought that the body of Jesus was laid out on at one point. That way, they would have something that was – metaphorically - touched by God. There were murals and art pieces decorating the walls. We even saw the tomb said to have held the body of Jesus before he rose from the dead. We would have gone inside, but the line was two hours long. On our next visit to Jerusalem, we will probably go inside. We lit a special candle in the church. For 1,300 years, the job of opening this holy church has gone to a Muslim family – passed down from grandfather to son and so on.
Bird!
This bird was outside a shop. Later that day, we went to the Israel Museum, where most of the famous artifacts from Israel are. We saw the Dead Sea Scrolls, a mummy, sculptures, jewelry and bones. I took lots of pictures.
