It took a little while, but finally here is a story on our weekend to Delhi! I’ll write a separate blog on my daily life advetures, otherwise it’s going to be too much to handle, both to write and read 😉
We planned to go to Delhi during our second weekend, although untill the last moment there was still uncertainty about that Saturday being a holiday or not. Finally we were lucky and got the green light to GO Holidays are a strange thing here, you can never ever be quite sure untill the very day itself, holidays can be cancelled, postponed or announced pretty much at random, which makes planning sometimes quite difficult! Anyways, we took a bus to Delhi, were we found a hotel in one of the main tourist areas. And yes everything in India is dirty including towels and sheets, but when traveling on a budget one cannot complain 😉
The next morning we met with Pradeep and his fiancee. First of all we went to Jantar Mantar, a collection of large structures built in 1725 to predict eclipses and those kind of things, I guess you know what I’m talking about. Very nice spot,
right in the centre of town and almost no other tourists around. We then moved on to Delhi gate, the Arc de Triomph of India, funny how they did not have nice flowerbeds surrounding the thing, but pots with flowers and plants, the way you find them in a gardening centre
After these small historical visits downtown we took a metro to the edge of town to visit a big handicraft fair. The Delhi metro system is impressively good by the way, new, functioning, clear, and clean! I completely loved that fair, so many colours! It seemed Andries enjoyed it a little less, strange how he is not that much into shoes, fabrics, and shawls. In the evening we said goodbye to our supervisor, who was in Delhi for a congress, and decided to make our own plan for dinner and the rest of the night. Our hotel had nice roofterrace so we settled there for a while with a nice beer (jaja I’m drinking beer now) and Andries decided to challenge his body with raw chicken, I believe the chicken won. Later that night we met some people in a bar, including the “famous” Swedish fashion designer Mika
Luther. Some Indian guys promised to take us to a nice party were we could dance. We agreed to join them, and after a 45 minutes tuktuk ride we actually reached something like a club, only to pay the entrance fee and find the club closing two songs later haha.
On Sunday we visited the Akshardam Temple, beautiful! This is one of the newest Temples in India, and the entire complex has been built in five years, very impressive. Too bad we were not allowed to take pictures in there, due to a terroristic attack security policy is strict in that place. They also offered some kind of visio/audio tour which was excellent value for money, with a movie about the founder, and the story told by several sets of almost real life dolls.
In short it was a really nice weekend, and I hope we’ll be able to go back there again soon, since there is quite a lot more to see in India’s capital. Fortunately our study will probably be finished by the end of march (more than one month earlier than we’d expected) so there will be enough time to travel!
