We arrived in San Miguel de Allende 6 days ago and are staying at the beautiful "Casa Young". Muchas gracias Gordon & Carol for the use of your house -- and right now it is well-filled. My brother Allin, his wife Alice, and my cousins Barb & Bing have come to visit. We have spent long lazy days exploring the town, drinking cappuccino, visiting the Cathedral, checking out the museum (dedicated to Ignacio Allende, hero of the Mexican revolution, shot by Spanish firing squad, and whose decapitated head was impaled on a spike and left in front of the main square for 6 months as a warning to those scandalous separatists who might want to shrug off colonial rule.). We have been shopping for pretty jewelry, drinking lots of beer and Margaritas, and eating way too much (fantastic tortilla soup with chipotle peppers, guacamole, and more). We spent yesterday at the local hot springs -- "La Gruta" -- a natural spring which has been channeled into several pools, one with a stone grotto covering it.

When we first arrived, it turned out that Al & Alice had brought a really nasty gastroenteritis from Calgary (where they live). Alice had it the day before they flew down, Allin got it the day after they arrived, ( Tarjei doesn't want me to add details) -- I (Katy) was the only one spared. Most people get their gastro while IN Mexico -- Allin & Alice preferred to import their own I guess. Anyway, we are all better now and plan tapas and drinks tonight at the little rooftop bar above "Pueblo Viejo".

Tarjei took his comatose computer in to a shop in town, and Jorge Hernandez looked it over, removed the hard drive, ordered a new one from Leon, installed all kinds of relevant software including Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010, then delivered it to Casa Young the next day, all for 700 pesos (about $62.00) So, it's working well again.

We have one more day in San Miguel, and then head west to Cuestecomate, a little town on the coast just North of Barra de Navidad. We plan to take Spanish lessons and hang out at the beach.

Hasta la Vista!

I have finally got to your travel blog and read it in its entirety. Very impressive and fun trip. We were familiar with a number of your stops up until Mexico. One of our SGS meetings occurs every other year in Tucson and we now have friends with a nice big house in Cave Creek near Phoenix. Callie's favorite is Jackson Square in New Orleans with antiques and bignes. Also partial to Savannah myself with its functional squares, many lively bars, and great food. So we will now follow as you travel through Mexico and see how it hits us. On the work front, I do not think I can meet your energy and enthusiasm or total patients seen. However I have been quite busy and am enjoying the closeness of office when driving to and from work. It looks like we have the laparoscopic equipment issue solved and will be doing our first case the end of January - starting with LAVH to get used to the equipment and then on to total hysts. We are in typical winter here - nice and cold - even got to skate on the lake last Sunday. I am scooping Nick away to Sugarloaf for a boys ski week-end and recharging! Happy travels to you both.
