We arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa on the 8th of Feb. after a 16 hr. flight from Atlanta!
Fred's sister Jane picked us up from the airport. It has been 26 yrs. since they've seen each other.

Jane drove us around the suburbs of Johannesburg where Fred used to live. We didn't drive into downtown Joburg because it is unsafe and has deteriorated.
It was very interesting seeing the different population groups and cultures around the city. It has a lot of atmosphere. The suburbs have hilly terrain with many tropical plants. The land in South Africa is very green.

We stayed at Jane and Eric's house for the first three nights during which we also visited Fred's brother Nic and his wife Delia and family. Jane and Nic both have lovely homes with beautiful yards and many colorful birds. The homes are very different in construction to the American homes.

Thanks Jane, Eric, Nic and Delia for all your hospitality and showing us interesting things on our trip!

We spent the next 3 nights at Fred’s sister Dawn and her husband Sam’s farm. Fred’s mother was also there, he hadn’t seen her for about 26 yrs! More about the farm as you scroll down through the blog.

Too dangerous to drive into the city center.

Many local Tswana and Zulu make their living this way. Others pick up trash for recycle. Many live in shanty towns which are called 'Locations'.

Great blog
Veronica forwarded this onto me - I love it. Very interesting. You are great to be able to do this and to spend your time on it. What a wonderful, if not emotional time, for Fred. Can't imagine what it is like after 26 years. Bet the years just fell away. Enjoy the rest of your stay. I look forward to more info.
