Chute de la Marmite.

Still have no new snow so skiing or snowshoeing wasn't an option today so we decided to head up to Rivierre à Pierre to see if the waterfall had neat ice around it. Was late in the afternoon so my pics don't have great lighting but it was kind of neat. The river is very high and fast flowing this year so probably the ice formations would be better if the water level had dropped. The Waterfall itself is called Chute de la Marmite. It is not a large waterfall but both times we visited it the water level was high so it had a pretty good roar to it. There is a nice walking path across the falls, down one shore, across another small bridge and back up the other side. On one side there is an old structure that looks like it was once some sort of mill as there are old concrete columns with large round holes in them that used to hold some sort of large (2-3 ft) pipe that came from the river, into the structure at a high elevation and then out the bottom of the structure via a narrow

channel. An interesting puzzle. The lighting was too dim in that area to get much of a picture.

We had visited the same waterfall on October 2nd weekend. At that point, the area rivers were in flood and the waterfall was even more impressive. With all the area rivers very high as they went into winter, if we get a fast thaw this spring there will be alot of flooing problems. There was flooding of the river behind our house closer to town in mid December, which is pretty much un heard of. You can still see where the water froze in place at the flood level instead of receding.

In small format, the waterfall and ice pictures miss alot of the interesting details so please click on the photo to see the larger version. It is worth it I think.
