Well we finally had a late morning. Everyone slept in and got up late, Swen and Eva brought breakfast and it was delicious. Thanks Swen and Eva.
Ok now with 7 folks in the same room and everyone either speaking German and or English it was quite over whelming. I think at one point there was 6 conversations going on at one time.
We finally decided that we wanted to go to the Salt Mines of Berchtesgaden. They’ve been mining salt here before Morton knew how to spell salt. My sister Ann has even been here before me. So we all went except for
Bill and Hedy they stayed behind.
We drove over to the salt mine it was just down the road. However, we had some miscommunications and we proceeded to the wrong village. Well we got that straighten out and were at the correct mine in plenty of time.
As everyone who has or knows someone that has gone to the salt mine you get to put on these coveralls. Then you get on this little train that takes you into the mine. The key word here is LITTLE. Once you get pretty deep in
the mine there is this slide you ride down even further into the mine. Oh, I forgot to mention you have these cool little radios that assist you with the guide. The way they mine salt isn’t anything you would think. Way too much to write so ask me next time we’re together.
Ok, the tour is over and I’ve got everyone looking for this small box of salt rocks that Ann has had forever. It was lost somewhere. I even remember this little box of salt when I was growing up. Well we found one it was in the antique window display.
Sorry Ann I thought about breaking the glass and taking it but they were watching me.
Next, one of the main and I mean MAIN reasons we came on vacation was to see the cows coming down from the mountains. Yes, you heard me correctly. Kirsten loves seeing cows, sheep and goats. I have no reason except in a former life she ran a cow farm.
So when we left the Salt mine we headed to this little village that was bring down their cows from the mountains.
When they bring the
cows down they are all dressed up. They were to be brought down sometime between 11 am till 2 PM. As we were coming over the hill at 1:59 PM the cows were walking down the street. Kirsten screens LOOK the cows, at the same time she locks up the breaks, cuts off the car and leaves. I think we were parked but I really didn’t see it or feel it happen. Bea and I pile out of the car still shaken.
Once the cows have passed and left some stuff on the road we jumped back into the car and went to the house to have lunch and pick up Bill and Hedy. There was this thump, thump, thump noise as we were driving back to the house. Yea, some of the stuff the cows left behind.
We had a light lunch and then loaded up the cars again and headed out on an adventure.
Our next adventure was to see the German museum on WWII.
I read an article a year ago about this very controversial museum. It is call Documentation Obersalsberg . It is a permanent exhibition on the history of Obersalzberg and
the Nazi dictatorship by the Institute of Contemporary History.
All right I know everyone know the story of WWII and how it ends. Well this is the location where a lot of the decisions were made. You know when you see Hitler in all the old film footage; you got it I was standing there.
This is not the Eagles Nest, but where it all began.
Very sobering to go through, it covers everything.
After such a very hard excursion we were all ready for dinner. Swen had made plans to create us a special German treat. Swen pulled together dinner, there were a few bumps in the road. But we had a great diner and everyone was stuffed.
We all went to bed rubbing out tummies, from eating too much.

Mom
Sounds like you are having a great time. I do, in fact, have still have the "antique" box of salt. I think it is in the attic. This antique will definitely go look. Some not so good news. Mama has broken her shoulder and is having surgery tonight (Thursday). Clayborn is sending you info on your regular e-mail. Will send more as soon as surgery is over. Love Ann
