Sunday morning in Banff

My arrival back at the hotel room woke Mark and Sam. We decided, since it was raining to try taking a scenic drive to Bow Falls in hopes that it cleared up. We were in luck. The rain stopped long enough for us to explore the falls and walk the path heading upstream.

Bow Falls is the last large drop in a long series of rapids and falls. We walked upstream for a half km or more and did not come to the beginning of the white water. Even in the dull weather the blue-green colour of the water was evident in the deeper pools.

Below the falls, daring tourists boarded rafts that drift on the current past the Hoodoos and other sites.

It started to drizzle again just as we were returning to our car so we decided to try an indoor activity and headed up the hill to take a walk through the Banff Springs hotel.

The hotel is enormous and very ornate. The decor is rich looking with oversized furniture and high ceilings. It has retained its Victorian appearance throughout the decades.

We walked the public areas inside and, when the rain slowed, stepped out onto spectacular terraces overlooking the mountains. We had lunch at the hotel's cafe and enjoyed the same views from inside.
