Our last official full day in the Kimberley, very sadly, but still lots of things to go and see in Broome. The weather forecast was not looking too great with thunderstorms predicted and the sea kayaking trip we'd booked to go on for half the day at Turtle Bay was cancelled.
With the weather not looking too hot and after our experience of leaking canvas pop-top in Derby, we headed off to Britz to get them to fix up the small hole in the corner so that, should it rain again tonight, we would not get wet. It was a fairly quick fix with a patch of canvas & some silicone.
Then we headed into Chinatown in Broome for a quick look around, lunch and a visit to Sun Picutres. Built in 1916, Sun Pictures is a Broome icon and holds the record for being the world's oldest operating outdoor picture theatre. All the seats are old style deck chairs - some covered & some uncovered. The other quirky thing about the picture house is that it is directly in the path of Broome airport which is probably less than 1km away !! Whislt there we experienced a jet which
had just taken off flying overhead (very noisy indeed !) Lots of nostalgia, character & history there - lovely to see something so old still operating and not being turned into a horrendous, popcorn smelling Muliplex with no class, style or character.
In the afternoon, headed out to Cable Beach which is a beautiful stretch of white sandy beach for about 20kms. It's so called as this is where the telephone line came in from offshore to WA. Whilst not a typical Kimberley dry season day (ie full sun & blue sky) - there were still quite a lot of people on the beach; fishing, walking and in the water. We spent our time walking along by some of the rock pools & taking photos. Shortly around 3pm, 3 camel caravans turned up to offer tourists camel rides along the beach. I really liike camels so booked onto the 30 min mid afternoon ride along the beach (not worth waiting for the sunset ride as given the weather it didn't look like it would be that great !!)
My camel was called "Phoneix" and was a failry young one of only 8 years old and only recently trained up
Sun Pictures, Broome
The seats look like as they are - not very comfy to be in the camel caravan. Apparently all the camels with the tour operator (Red Sun Camels) were originally wild camels & it turned out Phoenix was from Curtin Springs. I knew exactly where this was as we'd been to the Curtin Springs station (about 150kms away from Ayres Rock) last summer on our Red Centre trip.
Grant not into the camels but took lots of photos of the proceedings.
Then time for a quick coffee & snack whilst watching the sun in the very cloudy sky disappear. It was slightly disappointing there was no big red fireball sun going down but the light & view was still fantastic.
Back to the truck and to Roebuck Bay Town Caravan Park (the main one in the centre of Broome) for our final night's accommodation in our 4WD. It's been a great truck and we've had no dings, but cant' say we're sorry to part company with it. 19 days of living in a 4WD is quite full on.
Distance travelled : 20 km (35 mins)
