And so, finally I can realise the long running ambition to see
Angkor Wat... When I was planning my round-the-world excursion this one was always high on the list (perhaps top three) and I have always been fascinated by collapse of the sophisticated ancient civilisations such as the
Khmer Empire... Like the
Tāj, high expectations and a child like excitement that can only really be generated by a hand full of places engulf me upon arrival...
As well as the heat!
The blazing temperatures dictate that we have no real choice but to hire a Tuk tuk as cycling in these temperatures was simply out of the question... We decided to go for the $40 three day pass and in retrospect I can certainly say that (unless on a very tight schedule) to spend only one day seeing these glorious sites would be absolute sacrilege!!
Some people we met who had also taken the opportunity to spend three days to see the temples did seem to be somewhat
"templed out" by the final day, displaying enthusiasm on a par with having to watch Blackburn Rovers versus Bolton Wanders on a cold, rainy January night in
Lancashire but, whilst
the unforgiving sun did make it somewhat more challenging than I would have expected, when you are wandering round the likes of the
Ta Prohm, surveying the trees and the roots which had invaded the ancient temples left to the rights of the jungle for 500 years, no amount of perspiration or exhaustion can take away from seeing unquestionably the finest temples I have ever laid my eyes on...
