So after surviving the night on Crocodile beach we head off across the Island to Happy Valley. The road across is a challenge and Shenton gets lots of practice using his 4wd skills. The track changes from sandy desert like conditions to lush rainforest and back again. It does take us a good hour to get across to happy valley and we all need some breakfast after our long night!
After brekky we head off on our first part of real beach driving. This is fun, the sand is harder and everyone drives on the waters edge with the waves almost touchng the tyres. The beach is beautiful and the surf looks great, but we have to stop Shenton from going in as this definitely is not advisable due to the sharks and crocs in the water. Beides if he gets eaten who will drive the Tank off the Island?
We get to Eli creek which is only passable 2 hours around low tide according to the map. As we drive across we suddenly realise the windows are down so we get a bit splashed. The creek itself is lovely and we walk along the side and Shenton decides
to take the walk back in the creek itself. He has his weekly bath in there and then as he gets to the end decides to go for a swim , the only problem is that he doesn't have his swim stuff on so he apologises to the girls standing looking at him and whips his shorts off saying I am sorry if my pants go see through. They all laugh at this and thankfully his pants do not go transparent as he has a swim. (and not much to show anyhow:-))
We head off towards Cathederal beach which is where we are going to stay, a least we think that we will stay there if they have a room! We pass a wreck on the beach which is an old passenger liner that was it's way to Japan to be scrapped, probably for ammunition and guns as it was 1937, but it got wrecked here instead. As Shenton and his dad are trying to take pictures of the wreck a woman keeps getting in the way and all I can hear is Shenton shouting in his bad yorkshire accent "get out of road" I dont think he realises
the wind is taking his voice and she can hear him too!
We arrived at Cathederal beach and it is pretty deserted so we have a two bed cabin which is fine, that afternoon we go for a walk from the camp to a sandblow which is a short walk away. At the edge of the walk it says to be careful of dingos as it is mating season and we can see some sticks that people have left so we take them with us just in case. We were not expecting to see this amazing expanse of sand which just seemed to go on forever. Each time we thought we reached the top there was just more sand. In the end we had to give up as we were not sure how far it was going to go on for. Before we headed back Shenton decided to do a roll down one of the sand dunes which was very amusing to watch, especially him running back up again.
In the evening we taught Mchael how to play our special card game and after a glass or two of wine he decided that there should be more fireworks
on Fraser Island and the next time he visits he is going to arrive with a bagful of Catherine Wheels.
