Serbia: castles or alike

This wasn't a tour of the "castles" is Serbia, and those aren't Neuschwanstein type of castles but rather fortresses/palaces/mansions, and we weren't planning on visiting just those old manors, but rather decided to spend a weekend just driving around Novi Sad and through Vojvodina (province) and visiting some historic places we knew about, but never had time to see. It just happened that we saw a few "castles" in which, once upon a time, some important people lived. Some of these houses are now museums, hotels, some are in good condition, some are dilapidated.
I wanted to see Fantast, a castle near Becej (town in Vojvodina) built in late 19th century by a wealthy Serbian family who also owned a few other mansions, which we also visited on our way there. Aleks wanted to visit a small village Idvor, where his "idol" Mihajlo Pupin was born. Pupin was a Serbian physicist, or today he might be called an electrical engineer, since he invented long-distance telephone communication (or some aspect of it - ask Aleks for more scientific explanation 😊. He was also a professor and founder of the engineering department at the Columbia University among many other accomplishments. His house and museum in Idvor have been recently renovated, so we were really glad we went there.
Our next stop was a fortress in Smederevo (near Belgrade), which was built on the right bank of the Danube river. Even though the outer walls are the only things left of it, it still looks huge and quite impressive. And while we were there, why not see Golubac, which is a 14th century fort on the Danube, and not just on the Danube, but on the unbelievably wide Danube at that point next to the border with Romania.
On our way back, we stopped in Sremska Mitrovica, one of the oldest cities in Europe, once a capital of the Roman Empire, and saw large excavations, some enclosed in museums, those leftovers of the Roman times.
And you might have noticed, but once again, the Danube aficionados followed this mighty river and in the end wished that we had time to continue through Romania all the way to the Danube Delta and the Black Sea. And maybe we will, some day.
