Bulgaria Here I Come

SOFIA Day 68

I woke up on the train to see the country side of Bulgaria passing me by. It seemed to be a lot of empty country side and some small farms here and there. Not one of the most riveting views I have had. I arrived into Sofia after passing through a slum area on the outskirts of the city. It is really sad to see children playing in piles of garbage.

I headed out of the train station towards the city centre. There is a beautiful statue in the centre of the town high up in the sky of Sofia. I walked passed the many beautiful mosques and churches. On the top of the opera house between the chimneys stacks are music notes. Apparently, opera is very popular in Bulgaria. I then went to the square in front of the main church Aleksander Nikoli. In the square there is a little market that has a lot of old soviet souvenirs.

The Aleksander Nikoli Church is really lovely but they don’t allow photos to be taken. Inside I met two girls who are Mormon missionaries. They were really nice and interested in my travels. They are doing missionary work in Bulgaria for 1.5years and just began their time here. After I visited the Sofia church, which the city is named for, but there wasn’t really much to it.

I continued walking through the different parks and headed back to the train station for my next night train to Belgrade.
