From La Paz it was a bus off to the Peruvian boarder, crossing over the boarder turned out to be really easy one of the simplest boarder crossing we have done!
Our first stop in Peru was at Lake Titicaca but we first stayed in Puno for one night where we left our big bags and then went to do a homestay on one of the islands on the lake. The island where we had our homestay was called Luquina. We were greeted by some of the families who were playing music and then we went to go have a game of football against the locals, to be honest the football game was the most fun part of the homestay! Of course they completely destroyed us as we couldn’t breath (or felt like we couldn’t) due to the high altitude!
After the game we were taken to the house where we would be staying for the night and then played Uno with the two sons, while our “mama” made dinner. Dinner was nice very simple but good. We then went back to our room to dress in the traditional outfits, our “mama” came to help me put the layers of
Beautiful Lake Titikaka
according to steve its spell with a K i think its with a C! skirts on, and I looked like a pink mushroom!!!! We went to the village school hall where we saw all the others of the group also dressed up in the outfit, we were ready for the “party” at the party we learnt a few local dances which we then had to do! It was a little of a disaster but still pretty funny. After the dance it was off to bed as we had an early wake up call the next day. We woke up around 7 am the next day, had a really quick breakfast (bread and coca tea) before setting off to catch our boat. Unfortunately we didn’t enjoy the experience as much as we could have as it felt really fake which is a shame it didn’t feel as if the families were interested in doing it, more if felt like they were doing it just for the money they receive for it.
For the remainder of the day we went to another island which was basically a big tourist trap but still the island was really weird. The island is called Uros it’s basically lots and lots of floating reeds! Pretty cool ey? When you
step on it kind of moves like a water bed, not that I have ever actually slept on a water bed but I can imagine it would feel like that. We then got on the boat again and made our way back to mainland to Puno. We didn’t do much in Puno as it was just a place for us to stay in between Lake Titicaca and our next spot.
Our next stop was Cusco; Cusco is basically where everyone comes before doing the Inca Trail. Cusco is a very pretty city with lots of Incan remains and museums. The centre of Cusco doesn’t feel at all like South America but once Steve and I started walking out a little we got to see more of the “real” Cusco. There was a restaurant there which we soon came to love called Jack’s which has amazing food, smoothies and most importantly…Coffee! We didn’t do much in Cusco as we wanted to save as much energy as possible for the Inca Trail!!!
Next entry….INCA TRAIL!
