Whoo-hoo!!!!!

I made it safe and sound to Honduras on Sunday! Everything went super-bien with the trip, my luggage came through without a problem and I arrived at Copan around 6:30 Sunday evening.

When I touched down at San Pedro it was 82 degrees F outside! =) =) =) LOVE IT! It was great to see the mountains, chat in Spanish with the taxi driver, and have a fabulous nap on the 3 hour bus ride to Copan.

Sunday evening I attended my host family's church. There are a lot less people attending now than back in February when I was here last. The political/economical situation I feel has affected every part of life for everyone.

Monday morning I walked with my host brother, Daniel, to Mayatan and was able to see my former students and see the Honduran teachers again. It was great to see everyone again! It was a bit strange not to know any of the American teachers though. Like visiting my own home, but strangers live there now.

I spent the rest of the morning volunteering at CAMP ALABANZA with Urban Promise of Honduras. This ministry just started up this past year and I'm SO EXCITED for what they're doing. Right now they're finishing up the last week of their "summer camp" for kids from the public school who have vacation from November through January.

The rest of my time has been spent finding mis amigos and catching up on life. Unfortunately, not everyone is still around. One really good friend of mine is living in Guatemala. I was really looking forward to seeing her! 😞

It's also strange that there are so few tourists here. One of the two Spanish schools in Copan hasn't had any students for weeks. It's sad to see the shops and town so empty. We're all hoping that the new year will bring new hope.

Regarding the political situation ... Honduras had government elections in November and everything went through normally with that. The new president with take office in late January. Life is pretty much normal, with no worries for safety - which is great; I just pray that others won't be concerned to visit Honduras. It's such a beautiful place with beautiful people!

A highlight so far has been to be with my host family. Last night Daniel and I practiced math in English and then before bed I read him a few books in English. =)

I head to Tegucigalpa on Friday to spend a few days with friends in Central Honduras.

Love and Blessings!
April

PS!!!! A shout-out to the students and staff at AMBLESIDE!!!! I'm thinking about you all!!! See you in January!! =)

I read somewhere that Honduras has suffered a regression of about 10 years in the tourist industry due to the turmoil this year. Sad. Glad your trip has been successful thus far!
